what's the best set of power tubes for that smooth bluesy power tube distortion? Production tubes or NOS tubes cheaper than 60 bucks a pair please.

For what amp?

I usually associate 6L6GC's and 6V6's as being bluesy sounding. The JJ's break up very nicely (the 6L6GC's are warmer while the 6V6's have a sweeter breakup) and aren't expensive. It depends on the amp though.

People are tired perhaps of me singing the praises of the TAD 6L6WGB's. Small bottle tubes, saturate at the appropriate time, great break up.

I'm not sure though that any particular tube can be defined by a genre.

i just want a very musical sounding power tube distortion.

I use a transitional model 63 blonde bandmaster. It's voiced like a blackface AA763 without reverb. A very nice amp, big, bassy, smooth, but the power tube OD isn't too great (Mesa tubes...)I was thinking about the TAD's like scott recommended. The price sounds awesome too. Where are the bias testing points on a blackface amp with an adjustable bias pot?

well, in most modern metal, power tube distortion is referred to as mud (negative connotation). Jazz styles typically stick to completely pristine cleans. Blues and classic rock are the 2 styles in my mind that really dig the smooth/raunchy tone that can be produced by a good power tube breaking up.

Should i get a Weber mass probe adaptor, and where can i learn how to bias an amp effectively? I have experience poking around in amps and have installed a new OT on my bandmaster and electrolytic caps, don't worry about me killing myself. I know 6l6 type tubes have a safe range of 28-35mA. Help me out here, i need some solid answers.

scott, have you tried those TADs in a blackface or similar fender type amp? I'm sure that the combined high headroom of a bigger tranny and low headroom of small bottle tubes and 5751's would be a good compromise.

i play a strat, remember scott. I know you play buckers, perhaps the TAD's get a better tone for buckers?

somebody help me with biasing with a weber mass? i know you can just plug the sucker into your tube sockets and get a reading with the voltometer, when you're not playing this is the idle rating.
