I had a chance to bu a Mesa/Boogie DC-3 but I missed out on that, anyways I'm in the market for a good combo. The tone I'm looking for is a Opeth-ish type tone, Uk Highgain I guess you could call it. The most important thing is it being in a combo, preferably a 2x12 with good wattage.

Any suggestions?

price range?? there are lots to choose from. it depends on your budget.

Marshall JCM800 combo perhaps?

Its got enough volume to wage a nuclear war, and nails the brit tones.
Do you care about cleans?

Nothing ridiculously high, im not really looking in a certain price range yet, just wanna know the options.

EDIT: Mephis, i know what a JCM sounds like, not what im looking for and yes i care about cleans.

Peavey JSX combo might fit the bill.

if an 800 isnt what you want, but ya want UK highgain, which amps are you speaking of then? 900 series? 2000 series? If so just grab a TSL 60 or 100 watt combo(?)

Oh...they don't make it in a combo...but MESA Stiletto RAWKS for high gain brit tones..low gain too..Vox sounds to as much gain as you can stand. IT DOES require alot of tweaking though. Hated it first time I played it. After some tweaking it really grew on me.

i'm not fam w/ the band you speak of, so maybe I'm off base with my suggestions though....

1, forgot to mention that one. Guess I need to think outside the box somemore.

some like DeadSkinSlayer3 will comes across this thread pretty soon and give you a good idea of what amp(s) I'll get you that opeth tone.

Ya, I am hoping for DSS to chime in.

If you want an Opeth tone, grab a Laney combo, or a 5150 and keep the gain lower.

If you want a killer metal tone that will rip your ****ing face off, then get a 5150.

Either way, just get a 5150 . You'll thank me later!

Yeah, I was thinking of a 5150 2x12. But I wanted someone to help confrim that. I really considered a laney, but I can't get them here in canada.

But will a 5150 do the cleans?

I've read/heard that the cleans on the 5150 combo are ALOT better than the head. I've only played the 5150 II, so I can't comment from first hand expirense.

Try looking for a Carvin VX-212 from the eighties, preferably the grey carpet covered ones, they come with EL-34's, they don't use diodes in the distortion channel and can sound like a Fender, Vox or Marshall all depending on the way you set the highly usable tone knobs. Did I mention you can find them dirt cheap and are built to last. I just got one for $200 and even with the original tubes it is one of the best amps I have ever owned!!!!!!

I was looking at the combo anyways, so thats a good thing to know.

The combo's do have useable cleans. nothing amazing, though.

What I would do, is get something like a POD2.0 and run it into the FX loop return, and then run a y cable from your guitar to both the amp and the POD. Switch off the effects loop when you want gain, and kick in the effects loop to activate the pod and deactivate the 5150's preamp. That's what Björn from In Flames does with his rig.

Does size matters ? The Fender Deville is like a bigger version of the Blues jr. It gives good clean and stuff, prolly cheaper some other stuff. 2x12quot;

Ive got the VC50 combo, and it gets the BWP tone very close. I kind of recommend against laney simply because its a different kind of sound, which most people dont like. Its definately unique in the high gain area. Cleans are awesome though. I say go with a 5150, or a mesa of some sort.

Yeah I am going to go with the 5150 combo I think, and just saying but opeth use laney's you know.

SpeedDemon, either way I would recommend checking out a Laney. Just make sure that you get an all-valve version!

I would really like a laney, but I can't get them anywhere's even remotely near here. There is only one dealer in canada that I am aware of.
