the bridge volume pot on my explorer is crap, it crackles like hell when you try to turn it down, so i figure why not rewire everything while im at it. so anyway, what do you guys reccomend for the pot value? i think this one is 300k, but thats a pure guess. id probably just get another 300 as long as nobody has a strong argument for a 250k or 500k, but if you do, go ahead and say...

Seymour used 250K pots in the TeleGib...that'll make the JB sound smoother and less bright. When I used 250K pots with my own JB it sounded wooly and lacking in highs...I prefer 500K. Lew

i dont think 250k would really be appropriate for the kinda stuff i play. im just worried about the 500k being too bright. but theyre cheap enough that i can just get a 300k and a 500k, try em both and see what i like best if thats what it comes down to.

Pick up a couple of each; they're cheap! I personally like my JB best with a volume control and a no-load tonepot w/ the 50's mod.

i was under the impression that the more resistance the pot had the darker it would sound. At least that's the way it is with pickups, the more resistance the darker it will sound, right??

this is where i got my reasoning

Personally, I much preffer the 250K pots with the JB. Thats about the only way I can even stomach the JB.

I would go with a CTS Brand pot. They only make 500k and 250k, so go with the 500k. CTS is considered better than gibson, because gibson uses more plastic parts. Try that and if the tone is too bright, change the cap to a numerically higher value. That will bleed of some of the harshness. Caps are so cheap anyway!!!

FYI - higher resistant pots and numerically lower caps make the tone brighter. likewise, lower pots and higher caps would make the tone darker, due to the fact that more of the high frequencies in the signal are going to ground. This fact is independant of the p/up's DC resistance...
