Not sure where to put this thread so I'll put it in here...

Who's heard the John Mayer Trio cd Try! ? In my opinion it is the best album that has been released during the lifetime of my musical interest (last 5 years). John Mayer is really showing off his blues chops and theory knowledge on this cd.

Now my question is, has anyone seen JMT play live? I want to know about his rig. I know he's probably playing his signature strat, but what about his amps/effects? He owns a bunch of Dumbles and most of his cleans sound Fender-ish, but what about his OD'd tones?

Favorite Tone Samples from the Try! Cd:
Wait Until Tomorrow - Clean and OD
Out of My Mind - all OD
Try - OD

I've seen him live during his Heavier Things tour and was really impressed by his feel and chops too. Can't wait till he tours downunder again. Great player in the SRV mould.

As to his gear, I know on the mayer forum there's a thread that covers his gear entirely. The bits I looked at were his amps - Fender Vibro King, Dumbles and his signature (designed?) Two Rock. I've also got the same pedal he uses (I don't know if its the majority of his OD tone but it gets pretty close) which is a G2D Creamtone (Worth every penny IMHO.

Taken straight from page 23 of the december issue of guitar one.

Guitars: Fender John Mayer Strats, Teles; Gibson ES-335 Eric Clapton reissue. (i didn't know he had a signature tele)
Amps: Two-Rock 100W head and cabs; Dumble 100W head; Fender '57 Twin reissue, Vibroverb, Vibrotone Leslie Cab; Victoria VibroReverb head.

No idea how accurate it is, just thought i'd share.

I've been meaning to buy it. Maybe I'll get it tomorrow.

When i saw him with the Headhunters this summer, he was using the Two Rock amps... sounded very nice.

And i agree, this CD is extremely awesome... i still have yet to fully absorb it.

I know he bought one, but is he actually using the creamtone?

I need to get the CD and I'd love to try a Creamtone. That might be the missing link in my lack of appreciate distortion pedals. I think the allure is the quot;slightquot; overdrive it gives, not overall mayhem distortion.

They sum it up as like an 808 but with better base and no mid hump. Hmm...

The one I used to have was a very warm pedal, more in the realm of a Larry Carlton/Robben Ford tone than a classic 808 SRV thing. I believe newer ones are voiced a bit brighter.

I'm listening to it now, his tone is killer.

JM definatly has some chops and its good to see him steppin out.

HE DOES NOT have a signature tele. It just means his signature strats, and fender teles.

I'm assuming so, though I couldn't see his pedalboard when I went to his concert. The guys at G2D thank him for using the pedal on the site as well - not a bad semi-endorsement cause his tone absolutely rocks.

PS - My mate's Splawn just came in, Grits. Around $3k NZ. My god - the tone on the thing is incredible. From warm Plexi to a freakish Zakk tone. Amazing construction as well.Originally Posted by Kamanda~SDHE DOES NOT have a signature tele. It just means his signature strats, and fender teles.

He does have a Fender CS strat/tele hybrid though - cool looking guitar.Originally Posted by Scott_FI need to get the CD and I'd love to try a Creamtone. I'd recommend it Scott. At least try one out - slight overdrive is right, but also really transparent and lets the notes breathe a lot better. I've actually got mine modded slightly for more gain (which suits me better - most others I know are happy with it stock). If you ordered one direct, something to think about is asking for the Solo channel to be slightly louder than stock. Its a nice boost, but at band practise I've always wanted slightly more oomph...

Cool! -I'd really like to hear that at some point...

I had an unknown opportunity to see him in concert in October, I was pissed when I found out I missed a free chance to go see him. I heard they were great though, and now I guess he's finally doing some blues!

I'm listening to some dloads, good stuff.

After seeing John on the Crossroads DVD, I was expecting alot more from him. Unfortunately he didn't deliver. It was his best to date, but it still stunk of his pop music roots. I won't be buying the cd.

i didn't know it was out yet...i'll be buying it for sure!

i think his tone is pretty good. but i find the CD un-interesting

All good man. My mates currently getting his puter sorted and I'll grab some clips off him once he's done recording.

Maybe if I can drag him away from it I'll get you around to have a look see

Edit: Ah...knew these were around somewhere -

I really think John Mayer is a genious in the way he went about his carreer. He came up as a pop singer/sonwriter and got everyone's attention with his poppy acoustic songs, and now he is slapping everyone in the face with some saweeeeet blues. bravo mr. Mayer.

The John Mayer strat is a copy of the SRV one. Good choice indeed.

On the Late Show he used the quot;TRY!quot; Stratocaster and it sounded freakin' sweat. His wah sound was also gritty and wide...which I totally love! His rhythm section is pretty badass too.

My friend popped in the CD for me on a road trip and I was pretty impressed. It was sorta neat how he did that cover of quot;Gold Diggerquot;, but only if you think about the fact that Kayne West sampled that for his song of the same name.
