ok i have a guitar that doesn't want to play nice. when i loosen the truss rod nut, the nut just gets real loose and no relief is added to the neck. what do i do to get it to add relief when the truss rod nut is loosened? the neck is perfectly pin straight right now and it needs a bit of relief added. i have it sitting actually tuned up real high and the truss rod nut sligthly loose with hopes that the strings will pull the neck up a bit and add the needed relief. is this a good idea or not?

any other ideas?

thanks.

Sometimes truss adjustments are not instant. I would just tune it to pitch and leave it. Check it again tomorrow.

Larger strings may help too....

Yes, I too would wait a day and see what happens. If nothing happens you'll need to help the neck there.
A few things I do whenever I do any truss rod adjustement is help the neck with my hands (pushing it in the right direction) and actually warm it by rubbing my hand on the back of it fast. I've heard that tip once so I thought it'd try it out, I noticed that adjustements do get a little shorter, but maybe it's not just that.
If this doesn't work you'll most likely need to put the neck straight while tightening it, using blocks of wood and clamps. But that's not great for the neck I'd say. That should leave you with enough margin to loosen it again I guess.

Mike..... It might need to be pressed. Some necks over time and in certain climates will tend to flatten out. This can be remedied by pressing the neck with a heat clamp. Bring it to the shop on Sat. and lets have a look!

thanks guys.

Dave, i'll bring it in Saturday for Cris to look at for sure. i was just hoping to use it tonight at rehersal.
