A buddy of mine just gave me a set of Gibson 'buckers. They came out of a newer Les Paul so I assume they are 498T and 490R, but I can't tell which is which. Anyone know how to ID them? They have no markings of any kind and look exactly alike.

Are there different pole-screw spacings that are apparent between the two pickups? In other words, does one pickup have its screws set wider than the other? The wider set of screws will be on the TREBLE/neck pickup.

Does one pickup test with a higher kilo-Ohm reading with a multimeter? If so, it is likely a TREBLE/neck pickup.

Does one set of conductors appear longer than the other? The TREBLE/neck pickup wire harness is likely to be shorter.

Hope this helps.

Sorry bro, but you couldn´t possibly be more confusing in the process of giving good advice

The Wider spacing will be on the Treble pickup, if, but the Treble pickup is the BRIDGE, not the neck.

The hotter pickup (MMtest) will also be the Treble / Bridge pickup

The longer wiring on the other hand will be on the Rhythm / Neck pickup, about 3-4 inches (LP wiring runs to the cavity and then to the switch, then back to the jack)

Oddly enough, both wires are the same length. I haven't measured which is hotter...guess that's going to be the best way to tell. Haven't checked pole piece spacing either...should have though of that.

Thanks for the help.

Duh, the pole piece spacing made it quite obvious. I'm sure enough that they're 498T and 490R, so problem solved. Thanks again to all.

just listen- if they sound quot;okquot; for lots of music but not great at anything....Gibson pups (and it's a 500T if shrill)

Youre right! Too much St. Pauli, and an early quit time @ work can do that! WTF, the brain and fingers got disconnected from each other. You are a good wingman!
