I was curious as to what the tonal differences are between glass, brass, and stainless steel slides.
My favorite is glass or ceramic. Glass has a great glide over the strings. Ceramic is similar, but your finger stays drier on the inside, since it's porous. Brass works good for electric guitar because it has a nice mellower tone on high notes. I've never really liked chrome steel slides, and they tend to be the brightest.
When I was playing a lot of slide guitar, I kept dropping slides on the ground, and the ceramic ones would always crack. The glass ones with the closed end, thin enough to fit on my pinky are my favorite......I think they're Bigheart Slides. I never liked using my ring finger, since I want that finger free to fret chords.
the thicker the glass the bigger the slide tone
metal is brighter than glass, steel is brighter than brass
i like glass on electric and brass on acoustic
slightly off topic...what finger do you guys wear your slide on?
I have several slides.
I prefer a Dunlop heavy wall pyrex 215 medium on my pinky.
I use a small Coricidin bottle for more single note stuff.
I wear my slide on my pinky so I can also play chords with my other three fingers.
I have a large collection of slides in glass, steel and brass and use them all.
I think brass is the heaviest and gets the biggest most solid tone but because it's heavier than glass or steel I have to be careful to keep the pressure on the strings light so I don't get alot of fret rattle.
Glass is the opposite: it's the lightest and I can play fast with glass but the tone is not quite so big and solid. Of course, as jeremy mentioned, glass slides come with thin walls and thicker and heavier walls and the thicker ones are heavier and sound better.
Steel is right in the middle.
But I tend to use the Coricidan bottle slides that Curly sent to me. They've become my favorites.

I prefer glass, but i also use steel. I lost the steel slide though. I put my steel on my pinky and glass on my index.
I really like ceramic ones. I have one that I play on my ring finger and feels most comfortable there. The only drawback is that i can't quot;compquot; because my third finger has the slide on it... but I can play power chords still with my first and pinky fingers.
