Last spring sometime i bought an Epiphone with a broken neck... It was a Korina Exployer.... I have bought broken neck Epi's before and repaired them the best i can and play them. Tonight i was trying to intonate the Exployer and found that from the factory the bridge is in the wrong location.... I was adjusting the saddles to intonate it and the saddles would not come forward enough to intonate... It's a set neck guitar so nothing has moved and the repaired neck is not a factor.. The bridge is not damaged or bent... They drilled the bridge about 1/8th too far back and on a slightly different angle then my Epi LP that has the same bridge and scale length... Now i know why someone broke the neck... It's a POS.... Do i -A- plug and redrill the stock bridge? or -B- add a Floyd since it's all F'd up anyways....

Would using heavier strings and lower action help any?

Not at all.... The low E string saddle will not come forward enough to even get close to intonating... The Low E is normally the saddle that is the farthest back and the bridge is on in such a bad way that it will never intonate no matter what i could do... unless i remove the bridge and start fresh by plugging and redrilling the correct bridge location.... The Exployer's bridge when compaired to my Epi LP is 1/8th roughly farther back..... Enough to throw everything off.....
Use a lower tuning?
Solutions:
1. Lower tuning (BTW, heavier guage itself @the same tuning has nearly zero effect on intonation)
2. Reposition Bridge or add that Floyd.
Just change the tune-o-matic for one with a wider intonation range

A possibility, assuming of course that´s possible (mounting stud size and placement)
But I don´t know of any aftermarket bridge that´s has THAT much more travel that a 1/8quot; difference could be offset by it.... maybe 1/16 by a Schaller, but...
I would reposition the bridge. A floyd would be cool, and would hide the drill holes where the old bridge used to be
Put a floyd on it!
Ya i have my FRO i took off my Jackson.... I am putting the Jackson back to stock specs slowly... The FLOYD would be interesting on this guitar... but i started to think that it is an expensive bridge for a piece of POOP like this Exployer, but at the same time would be cool.... In my parts bins i have a few old 80's Floyd TALL BLOCKS if i needed to raise the bridge up... The one worry i'd have is the nut area has been glued back together and was in pieces when i bought the guitar.... i wonder if putting the 2 little wood screws for a Floyd nut would hurt anything i repaired....
Question for Zerberus
is the correct mounting of a FRO posts on a 24 3/4 scale guitar like this Epi 24 1/4 from the nut to the center of the Floyd posts?

OFR /Gotoh /Jackson JT-6 /Takeuchi TRS /IBZ Edge / ESP Floyd and Kahler steeler are all mounted @ Scale length - 1/2quot;... the only common Floyds w/ a different mounting distance are Schallers (FR II) and their copies, there subtract another 16th.
You may want to consider mounting it 1/32 or so farther forward if you plan on using the guitar in standard tuning (to guarantee quot;intonatabilityquot;, because of the neck angle), but it should work fine @ 24 1/4.

Cool! and Thanks! I'll have to remember the 1/32 rule for an angled neck... This will not effect the low E string from going back as far as it may need?
Scale length minus 1/2 inch is what i thought it should be... thanks for comfirming....
the 1/32 isn´t a rule, but a quot;feel thingquot; depending on the actual angle... but most explorers I´ve seen would probably do fine without
Ok i'm not always the smartest guy around so i feel a bit stupid i missed this last night. But fooling around with this Epi i got the stock bridge to just barely intonate even though the bridge is in the wrong location.... Last night i didn't notice it was one of those bridges that has the retainer wire clip like old Gibsons had and you can turn the saddles around... I should of noticed this last night but i didn't for some reason.... I normally know to look for these things. I took the bridge apart and turned the saddles around and with the low E,A,D string saddles jammed as far forward as they can go the guitar just intonates without redrilling the bridge posts..
The original trouble of the bridge being too far back is still there and you can not move the low string saddles even a hair closer to the pickups.... They are as far forward as they can go and even with the saddles angle facing the right way it just barely works.... the bridge is about 1/8th farther back then my other Epi with the same bridge, but at least i found a way to use it in tune without a massive retooling of the guitar...

This is not close to the first time I've heard of this sort of thing happening with Epi/Gibson guitars. Apparently, they make so many that not everyone gets checked out completely, just spot-checks.

I was playing the Epi Exployer tonight.... at least it does not wobble when playing higher up the neck now..... Just like my Les Pauls i knock this things strings out of tune real easy.... i've never been able to keep Gibsons in tune for more then a few songs.. Now that it is intonating somewhat pretty good i should look at getting rid of the plastic nut oneday.... What a POS nut!
