I'd first like to steer you to The Vault this is where there are threads of some importance, like for example pup shootouts, and write ups about tone. Lew's Ultimate Strat Tone is a must read for those looking for strat singles and single sounds.

I'll tell you a little bit about pup types, b/c from your post I figured I might help you a bit with terminology. There are several different types of pups but the two you need are Strat Style Single coils, and a Humbucker. A humbucker is two bobbins wired in series and generally sharing a bar magnet made of AlNiCo (Aluminum, Nickel Cobalt.

Now what do you want to do with the Neck and Middle positions? Do you want to keep singles for flexibily? or more buckers? Also what kind of rig are you using? Also what are some of your favorite tones and what do you want your pups to do that they don't currently?
