I have been using 6L6 tubes for years now in my 5150 and now my dual rectifier. I just bought some Mesa El34 str442 Svetlana tubes and like the sound but find it lacking in the low end a little compared to my 6l6 tubes. I was wondering why most amp companies use EL34. Do they compensate for this lack of low end with the amp? Is the dual rectifier not well suited for EL34 tubes as much as 6l6? what are your preferences?
I believe low end has more to do with the amp design than the tubes. With that said, EL34s tend to be more mid range oriented and punchier. Some people may or may not like that. I prefer mids myself because it allows me to cut through live easier. Bass takes the low end, the singer takes the high end and I like to sit in the middle.
It all depends on the design and the characteristics that they are trying to achieve. Chris has it nailed down pretty good but I'll also add that EL34's tend to distort quicker than 6L6's.

I am getting new pickups and pots, and am thinking i should try to install them myself, i have studied the diagrams and looked at the inside of the guitar enough to know where to solder. I have never had any actual experience with a soldering iron. I suppose i could try soldering some scraps of wire to get the hang of it. Should i try to do it myself, and if i should, what kind of soldering iron should i get?
get a 40 watt soldering iron
practice is a good idea ... the important thing to remember is to go slow, be careful, not too much solder, have someone there to help you because, until you get experience, it can be a job that takes 3 or even 4 hands ...

What would be the sonic difference between having an alder body with a veneered ash top as opposed to a swamp ash body in a tele?
Is the venner just for aesthetics? Because I don't think it will have much affect on tone. It will still sound like a alder bodied guitar, I think.
I don't really know if veneered would be the right term because i just saw in harmonycentral.com that some of the reviewers are describing that way. btw, the guitar in question is a yamaha pacifica 311MS. It's like a budget-version of the mike stern sig model that i think is made of ash.

Does anyone know the function of each of the 4, preamp tubes in a DSL 50 head? Is the preamp tube that is closest to the power tubes the phase invertor? I'm assuming it is but I'd like to be sure before I start to experiment with the preamp tubes. I'm curious as to what tube combinations other DSL 50 owners have tried so any suggestions are most welcome. Thanks.
Mike, generally the preamp tube closest to the input jack is your first gain stage and the farthest from the jack/closest to the power tubes is the inverter.
Someone here must know the exact funtion of each.

Trying again.
This is a different clip as my other I had I accidently pushed record in the middle. Long story.... Soundclick issues led to a full meltdown of all things... LOL

Up for sale is my slanted upright Sovtek 2x12 cab.
If i remember correctly it was made in '96, and i am the second owner.
A year and a half ago i replaced the stock speakers with a Celestion Vintage 30 (top) and G12h (bottom).

Looking at the latest sam ash ad and they have this guitar listed for $674. Unlike most RG models this is mahogany with a maple cap in a transparent lavender. It has the edge 2 trem and two humbuckers rather than the usual HSH configuration. Oh yeah another interesting departure from the standard RG offering on this model is a neck thru design. That should add a little tone and sustain back after the trem is done ripping out the heart and soul. LOL. Floyds can't live with'em can't do stupid guitar gimmicks with out them. Thanks for any feed back.
Only thing I would say is I like the Wizard Prestige necks much more than the Wizard II. If you like a thin flat neck they are awesome. The Wizard II doesn't feel as fast. I have an RG 1570 and I really like it. The Edge Pro II seems to work well, very stable. I can pull off some cool Dime style Harmonic screams.
According to the description of the guitar the neck seems to be the same 5 piece minus the prestige title that is on the 1570. Also the 1570 comes with the edge trem. I am quite familiar with the 1570 as I just returned one. When I played it in the shop it was great but I could'nt leave well enough alone and had the tech at sam ash put 10's on the 1570 and it turned into a buzzing piece of garbage. If I find the RGT42 to my liking I will retain the stock 9's as the RG's don't seem to do well with a larger string gauge.

Has anyone tried the m80 yet? I went into my local shop the other day and spent a while with the '51 and the m80. Both were very cool especially for the price. th '51 was $150 and the m80(bolt on version) was $235. There was a set neck one for $450 but If Im gonna blow $450 I doubt I'd blow it on a squire...Both the 51 and the m80 were begging me to buy them with a new set of duncans or emgs...I think thats what I'll do too...anyways. has anyone else played the m80? I know the '51 has gotten popular but what of the m80? Yay? Nay?
I've just done the same thing you have - played it in the store. All I can say is, its one of three guitars on my quot;Christmasquot; list.
