Its funny, this post is similar to spidey's about getting some pups tweaked in. I loved my new JD/APS-1 combo when I first got it, but the quot;magicquot; wore off quick. Now I'm loving them again simply because I realized I needed to tweak my set up to make them sound right. They're my first A2 mag pups, and they have a lot more high-end than anything else I've played. I just had to make a few adjustments to maximize their qualities. The JD is bright and twangy, without being brittle or harsh, and the APS-1 has great quot;chimequot; and sparkle.
One odd thing though, and this part is for Lew: In your quot;Ultimate Tele threadquot;, I noted that you particulary love the combined sound of the two pups. For whatever reason, I don't care for that tone as much. Each pup has its own unique sound, that seems to get lost when combined. They still sound good, but they sound more generic when combined.
I just thought it was interesting that we hear this differently, in this case. Might be my cheapy Tele-clone also.

I know in a tube amp that most of the overdrive sound comes from the poweramp, but what's more important for the responsiveness, the preamp or poweramp?
If I want tube feel, but use a pedal for distortion, would I be well off with a tube preamp/solid state poweramp hybrid?
I had a hybrid amp once. It was a MusicMan 112 Fifty. The power section was tube, and there was one pre-section with a tube, and another which was solid state. Ok, after some years I realized I always used the SS section with different pedals, and the sound was always great. Hybrid amps with 2 different pre-sections is a very good idea how to make great amps.

Hey guys,
I've finally decided to upgrade my pickups in my Epiphone Goth Flying V. That's a mahogany bodied guitar, by the way. I've already decided on an EMG 81 in the bridge, but I can't decide on a 85 or a 60 in the neck. I play distorted leads in the neck from time to time, and I also want a good clean sound. Judging by this, I think that I'm leaning towards the 85, but your opinions would be very helpful. With the 85, I could opt for the Zakk Wylde set, which brings me to my second question. I have very limited electronical skill. How much would it take putting those in (The ZW set has Quick-Connect wires)?
Thanks very much.
P.S. Hope it isn't a problem that this is the Forum...

Hello! I need some advice about humbuckers.... I saw a neat picture and bluesy nickname at your profile and I decided that you might be the right person for my question...
I want to find a mellow sound for blues, jazz and rock-a-billy (j.j. cale, melvin taylor, brian setzer...)
I have a hollowbody ibanez artcore and i was thinking about ibanez super 58 (installed on pat metheny signature guitar) but i want to check out too-I heard some good sounds from s.d.

First listen to this clip. Now tell me which WCR pickup you use, the amp you run it through and the style music you play. I`m looking to get either the Goodwood or the Herc set, as soon as my wallet gets ALOT fatter. lol
BTW, that clip is the Goodwood bridge. Killer tone huh?
No WCR pickup users here??

Hey, I have a maple neck and maple fretboard on my OLP MM1 Axis that is kind of dulled and needs to be shiney once again! What can I use to buff this sucker iup? I have lemon oil but it did absolutely nothing to it. Guess that only works on Rosewood fretboards. What can I do to bring shine and luster to it? It it NOT a shiney hard finish but more of a pretty worn satin type finish.

My new '79 reissue Dean V. I haven't actually taken possession of it yet but Tim @ CenterStageMusic has posted some pics of it on the Dean Forum per my request before I PayPal him. Hopefully I'll get it some time next week. Once I've had a chance to put it through it's paces I'll post a review along with more pics. I understand the stock pups aren't too bad but if they aren't I have my eyes on a Custom/59 set I think. I'll keep y'all posted. I love new stuff!
damn. thats the exact V i am looking at lol, a white dean '79. I believe its the same type the guy from Fireball Ministry plays, Dean makes kick ass guitars.
The title of this thread sounds dirty

How do those work? does anyone have experience with them? Are they good? Seems good to me since I only tune down to d and just standard.....imput please
They replace the low E's allen screw that holds the string in place.
I had one on my RR-1, hated it. While it does drop the E to D fine, it requires the trem to be blocked. With a recessed trem, I sure as hell wanted to pull up, so I took that thing out and sold it.

What is the major differneces between a 1 3/4quot; and a 1 11/16quot; nut width? IS the difference noticable and what other factors are there?
Yes, they are noticeable. I prefer 1-3/4quot;, but it is a very wide space between strings.
Think of it this way -- you can tell the difference between a .009 and .010 guitar string, then you're definitely going to fell the difference in the extra 1/16quot;.

I am looking for a middle wattage (40-70 watts-ish) with lots of headroom, full rich jazzy sound, Marshall or Fender type sound...I really like the sound of the Fuchs and Fender clean chimey rich sound, not going for Matchless type low wattage slightly pushed sound....I just want full clean rich 3d tone, and I plan to use pedals for overdrive...Lower the price the better...
I had been looking at this homemade builder guy on eBay, but his circuits are based off Matchless ones and I don't dig Matchless tone too much, too raw...
I need reverb and the cab is 8 ohm...

i need a pickup that doesnt have a ton of output and im liking what i see/hear about the PA-TB1b but is there a regular non-parallel axis trembucker with this EQ setting?
I was just noticing today, that the Original parallel axis trembucker comes in a neck version. But they only show one set of dimensions for both pups.
Makes you wonder.
