Date format changes from eg 27 Feb 06 to 2/27/2006 when I merge from excel to
a list in a table. How keep my preferred format?

Here are some links

word.mvps.org/FAQs/MailMerge/...DataSource.htm
word.mvps.org/FAQs/MailMerge/...AMailMerge.htm
word.mvps.org/FAQs/MailMerge/
in the last link there is another link called
How to force Word to use the number format you want in a mail merge field
I think that is what you are looking forbtw, you use Alt F9 to show the field codesI have no problems if I use text dates, not just formatted as text but real
text either by using
=TEXT(Date_cell,quot;mm/dd/yyquot;)
or formatting cell as text
Also in a case like this you are probably better off asking in the Word
mailmerge newsgroup
