i need to enter quot;1-10quot; in a cell as a category heading and will need to enter
similar data for the same reason, but every time i try this, once i select
another cell it is changed into eiter a date or something else. i've tried
changing formats and creating custom formats, but nothing i do will make the
cell stay as i type it. please help
Type a ' before the 1-10; that will force Excel to accept the input as text.

Either type a leading apostrophe before the 1-10, (it will only show in
formula bar), or, pre-format the cells for TEXT
