I am thinking about sanding the finish off the neck of my guitar and was wondering in anyone has any tips on how to best accomplish this.
Scrape it with glass.
A sanding sponge will work good. Helps keep the contour from changing.

Ditto. Break a piece in a box so you can get the right contour for the neck. It works great. Takes a little skill, but really isnt that hard at all. Dont forget to oil finish it or refinish it in some way though. Otherwise you may have some massive warping in your future.

You could use steel wool to take some finish off. I just used a brillo pad that I worked most of the soap out of.
I have sanded down the necks of all my guitars. Just use different grades of sand paper and finish with steel wool. Then oil after that. Works great.
thanks guys. I will get this done soon.
I do this to any of them that have glossy necks, and always used the lightest steel wool (300, maybe?) and oil them occasionally.
I own 2 Epiphones that have been broken at the headstocks.... One LP and one Exployer.... i've been debating sanding the finnish off and just oil the wood..... I can't wreck the value anymore then they are... For now i have filled the cracks with super glue to even things out.... That finnish on them is thick and nasty to remove i bet....

Actually no,neck finishes are very easy to remove due to the camber.
This is why I use glass, well one of a couple of reasons.
1-Traditionally when shaping violin necks they used to drop a large piece of glass and pick through for the right camber.
2-Glass requires very little pressure and if applied right will not remove any wood and risk altering the shape, humping the wood or driving dust into the wood or discolouring the grain.
3-A clean unfinished edge on glass is not subject to burrs, plus it has a higher temper point and is less likely to heat up and misshape.
4-The cut is so quick it is less likely to chatter the grain.
