Are there any better/cheaper/quieter pedals that do the same thing as:
-Deluxe Electric Mistress (for classic flanger tone)
-Deluxe Memory Man (Analog delay with a bit of modulation)
Did Dunlop stop making the Uni-Vibe or something? It seems to be back ordered everywhere...
For a flanger, look for a used BOSS BF-2 or BF-2B. The Bass version is great for guitar, nice and warm, very quiet. The BF-2 is the same circuit and can be modified very easily to make it the same as the Bass version. Just a few component differences.
Delay can be one in a million. I haven't personally messed with analog delays much but I do like my BOSS DD-2 Digital Delay. The DD-3 is the same thing really and sounds just as good IMO. They may be digital but they are quiet.
The Uni-Vibe is still being made as far as I know. Everybody wants one apparently.
I have an Echo Park, great for digital delays esp. tap tempo, but the Memory Man has a sound that is different than the Line 6 analog model. Basically, I'm wondering if there's anything I'm missing out on by buying the Mistress and Memory Man.
It was more of a joke out of frustration for being back ordered for so long on the Vibe.
You're not missing out on anything. Well, yeah, you are.....HISS. EH's are notorious for adding unwanted hiss. When actually playing in a band environment, the difference between the Line6 model and the EH MM will be so small you won't be able to tell. I've heard that Line6 EP before and it is sweet. Through the DIY grapevine I've heard they're coming out with a reverb pedal soon.
Yes, a reverb AND a rotating speaker simulator! Needless to say I'm pumped about that... lol Thanks for the comments on hiss, and the band situation. I see what you mean.
I have an old Washburn Analog Delay. I got it cheap and it's been better than any other Analog Delay I've messed with. Of course I didn't give any of the $300 ADs a really fair shot- I wasn't going to put out that much. I've also got a Boss DM-2. It's all right, but not as cool as the cheap ass Washburn.
The Ibanez De-7 does the analog tape delay simulation very well for the price. Seems underrated to me

As for Flangers, I have no use for Boss or DOD Flangers and Phase Shifters...I like my Electric Mistress, and I like my vintage MXR Flanger, the ADA is cool too. As for Echo units, I prefer the MM...I would love to have an Echoplex, but the MM is a fine unit and it's much more solid/sturdy than a plex...

Just weighing my options. The Small Stone arrived today and I'm having a great time with it. The volume drop is a bit annoying, but the tones are great.
You know how some people are fuzz and overdrive junkies? I think I'm a modulation and esp. leslie/vibe/phaser junkie! I think an awesome addition to the Electric Mistress would be a footpedal for when it's in Filter Matrix mode. On that topic, are there any phasers that can have the LFO disabled and have the notch manually controlled by footpedal?
usually i find i only get a volume drop with a guitar that has hot pups.
i have a rotosphere and i gotta say that with a little tweeking, its the best leslie simulator ive ever played with. i swapped out the tube and got the settings right and it sounds great. not cheap but if you can score one, used its worth it
PFDarkside- have you compared the MM, no, EM Electric Mistress to the MXR flanger?
Is the MXR flanger comparable to the Mistress. I want the MM, but my wife may not like me to have a mistress even if it is an inanimate object mistress
If David Gilmour used a MXR flanger instead of the MM, would you/anyone be able hear the difference?

The Electric Mistress is the way to get the Gilmour thing going on but the MXR is one of the keys to the Van Halen thing, I will also say this...the reissue Electric Mistress is just as good as the original, they really got it right, as for the MXR...the reissue is garbage...sorry but if you want the real tone of the MXR unit, save and buy a real (NON Dunlop) MXR Flanger! As for the Memory Man, it is not a flanger...the MM is an Analog delay WITH a Chorus function built in but keep in mind it is not a normal chorus...you CAN'T run the chorus w/o delay...the chorus is ONLY there to give a little detuning effect to the echo to make it a little closer to a real tape delay...
Sorry Christian. I need more coffee to wake up.
I was meaning to compare the Electric Mistress, EM to the MXR Flanger. Not the MM Memory Man. My bad. That was a terrible typo
I haven't played an MXR so I can't compare it, (and I haven't bought the Mistress nor the Memory Man) but the thing I like about the Deluxe Electric Mistress is the subtle tones you can get. When I think MXR I think EVH. I may be totally wrong, and that's not necessarily a bad tone, but the more subtle side of flanging is what I'm after.
BTW - My Univibe came in yesterday and I dig it so much. I don't really consider myself a vintage guy, but I was just jamming with the Vibe and Tweak Fuzz with the Strat. It was awesome.
Wow, is there that much diff between Gilmour's Electric Mistress and EVH's MXR? Or do Gilmour and EVH simply use their flangers differently with DG being much more sublte in his flanger? Is there really that night and day contrast between the EM and the MXR?

That has nothing to do with how they are used but they units just are completely different.

This is really good to know. Thanks Christian.
Mr. Darkside, thanks for starting this thread and then allowing me use it. It has very useful info.

What I didn't dig about the Memory Man was the hiss that would appear only when repeats sounded. Check this clip, and listen carefully. You can't miss it. It's especially noticeable in the first three notes and at the end of the Floyd-esque riff. Listen all the way to hear the hiss trail off. No reverb, no software fade-out.
Note that in the example, the pedal is on through the entire duration of the clip.

Who cares when the band is playing???
I don't for sure!
