I've been having this problem for awhile. I've tried to figure it out and asked on here before but never could fix it so I've just gotten used to it.

I have an older Classic 30. When the speaker was in it, I couldn't even turn the volume past 2-3 or something inside the amp would rattle really loud and you could hear it over the guitar. If I turned the volume up, the rattling would just get louder and louder. So, I took the speaker out and put it in it's own cab, made a 1/4quot; jack in my amp with the original speaker wires, and hooked it to the cab with a guitar cable. Eventually I blew the speaker. I got a new speaker (jensen c12n 16 ohm like the original), put that in the cab, and bought what I was told by the dude at the music store the right speaker cable. For some reason, I can only turn the volume up to 2 or 3 and the speaker starts crapping out.

What is wrong? I don't understand why it can't handle it.

Thanks for any help

sounds like the problem might not be the speaker.

are you sure its the speaker crapping out? what does it sound like?

It's sort of a cracking, popping noise. That's the only way I can really describe it... it sounds pretty much like I'm playing through a blown speaker when I turn it up.

Sounds like tube rattle to me. I've heard lots of people have had success wth this thing. from : localhost/cgi.ebay.com/TOMS-TUBE-TAMER-...QQcmdZViewItem

The tubes do rattle a bit on my Classic 30 but it doesn't bother me a bit. Sounds more serious though in your case.

Also try turning the amp on and tapping the preamp tubes with a pencil and (if I remember right) listen to see if any of them ring or make any other sound than just the tap of the pencil.

First, I'd change all the tubes, if you haven't recently. Take the chassis out of the cabinet and tighten anything that looks loose, like the PC board or tube sockets.
Make sure nothing is rattling on the cab, and put the chassis and speaker back in.
Tighten everything.

The link for that tube tamer looks interesting. If that's the only way to get the tubes quiet, go ahead and buy that device. I've been told that another cheap cure for tube rattle is to put a stripe of silicon glue around the tube. It won't burn, but will dampen the rattle.

Ok, I tapped all the tubes with a pencil. The first 2 preamp tubes don't make a sound, but when I hit the third I can hear a bell like noise. What does that mean?

My Classic 30 also makes a rattleing noise on the low notes..... Drives me crazy sometimes...

Well the other tubes might not make noise because they are used by the channel you weren't on? Anyway the bell-like sound MIGHT mean that tube is microphonic but to be honest I'm only speaking from what I heard. Hopefully someone else can explain it with some definitive info.

Sometimes the noise i hear out of my Classic 30 sounds like a Reverb Spring buzzing..... I know the reverb on my C30 is really sensitive too.... 2-3 on the knob is the highest i can turn the reverb on... Peavey insists i change the tubes before heading any farther to find the buzzing source in the amp... the buzzing is not amplified..... It just sounds like something inside the amp is buzzing with the low notes so i think it's the tube sockets rattleing on the metal chassy... Maybe i should order one of those tube holders...
