Hi everyone.
While looking around on ebay the other day, I came across a pair of PRS McCarty Hollowbody pickups for a low price. The seller claims that the neck pickup is wound to around 6.8K and the bridge pickup is wound to 7.5K. I assume that they are using Alnico V magnets in these pickups.
Has anybody heard these pickups, and if you have, how do they compare to say, 59's, or more appropriately, a set of Jazz pickups?
Thanks much for the help.
I have a feeling they're a bit underpowered. I really love the stock McCarty pickups, but those have a higher resistance like 8.8/7.6 or something near that.
I wish I could sell you mine, from my teal black McCarty, but I'm saving the stock pickups on that one. I should throw those in a LP, and see how they sound there.
My initial suggestion would be to not get those pickups, but rather a normal McCarty set, 59's, or Seths.
PRS wouldn't say what magnets they use, but i *think* the McCarty pickups have A2 magnets. I have a set and they have a sweet, smooth and fat sound. The McCarty Archtop pickups found in the hollowbody PRS's are basically just underwound versions of the McCarty pickups.
I agree with Benster. The Archtop McCartys are just underwound versions of the McCartys. The Archtops pups are very very clean and sound best with lower gain settings or jazz/blues tones. Actually, they are probably one of the best clean sounding pickups out there, especially from a guitar manufacture. I don't care to use them for higher gain applications, as I don' think they were intended to do so. They are incredible pickups for what they do and compliment the guitar they were made for.
I personally dig the McCartys pups and they sound like A2s to me.
