Man i trashed this pickup. But wow! this thing is really not what i expected. I expected it to be somthing like an older gibson metal case kinda thing but its far from it. You could dunk these in water and they would still be fine. Everything is molded in plastic and totaly sealed. One thing i think is cool that i didnt expect is how the whole pickup is shielded in this wire mesh that wraps around the whole pickup and its grounded. These really are quiet pickups and i can see why. I think ill get one of those pickup booster things and try it on these. All they really need is a little more output to bring the gain up a little and they would be perfect.

So i ripped one apart and took pictures

I have a few to spare so i figured trashing one would be ok

First i had to use an exacto blade to get the bottom moulding off.
under the moudling there is a metal plated fiberglass board. Probobly where the electronics are mounted for the actives.

2 small coils with a metal blad pole similar to the lawrance pickups.

here you can see how the moulding is incased with the wire mesh that shields the whole thing.
The coils are kinda small and narrow kinda like a mini bucker and they are offset a little from the bottom where the cable comes out.

Most of my steinbergers i leave the EMG in the neck and replace the bridge because i want a little more gain but if you are an aggresive picker these arent bad.

I noticed somthing, the magnets arnt like the regular humbuckers. There are 2 magnets and they are seperated by a strip of metal. Why would they do this?, the magnets are actualy the same also. They arnt wanting to pull they are wanting to push apart. so the poles are the same direction. How can this work as a humbucker?

I thought coil1 had to be in-phase with coil 2 for it to be humbucking and noiseless?

looks like all yours are EMG selects though. anybody know how those differ in construction from the regular EMGs?

Well i thought ide rip apart a cheap one first. No way am i going to try this on a $80. active. They are so sealed up you have to tear it apart just to get inside. I know now not to try to take an active apart it would ruin it.

Thats what i wanted to see is if the lower end ones were just crippled actives. I know sometimes companys find that the top of the line model is defective so they cripple it and sell it as a budget model (like celerons) i hoped the active guts were still in this pickup but they wernt.

Ah . . . I see.

If we can get 80 of us to chip in a buck . . . we can do it.

That reminds me, I wonder how many folks know they don't make 1.3Ghz, 1.4Ghz, 2Ghz, etc, processors. They make one version, and test it. 1.3's are simply 2's that quot;failedquot;. (A slight oversimplification, I know, but thats the crux of it.)

By any chance was that a 60? Because 60s are suposed to be mini buckers.

If you guys really want to pitch in to buy an EMG and have someone tear it apart... I'll pitch in a few bucks, and I can get them new for $65.

I dont understand the seperation with the magnets. What will this do? would it sound better if they used the same magnet? They are already SUPER quiet but if the they used the same magnet maybe it would sound better?

the smaller magnet may be polar opposite of the bigger magnet. if that's the case. the coil with two magnets will behave somewhat like a p90.

Neither has 2 magnets, one is on one blade and then its seperated by the metal strip. Its a strange pickup

Those EMG Selects are built in the Cort factory in Incheon, Korea.
