What's best tone pot value to use with a 500k vol.pot...250 or 500,and does it matter. If it does why.

With humbuckers, I'd say 500K because 250K would allow some highs to bleed to ground even when the tone control is set to quot;10quot;. Lew

1. The general rule of thumb is 500k for buckers and 250k for single coils, but ultimately let your ears be your guide.

Lew, that's the best explanation I've heard for why LesStrat has more clarity with 500K pots. I was concerned that it might make him 'brighter', but what really happened was a crisper, cleaner tone.

The standard rule, as mentioned above: 500k both tone and volume for humbuckers and P90's, 250k for single coils.

MY RULE:

500k if it sounds too dark or muffled, 250k if it sounds too shrill or thin.

Of course 250K won't correct a quot;thinquot; tone...you'll just have the same thin tone with less highs if you switch from 500K to 250K. Lew

I suppose I should be more specific. It depends on the kind of quot;thinquot; you're talking about. A 250k pot certainly won't add mids and lows. I was thinking more of the kind of guitar that has fairly decent mids and lows but the top is just razor sharp and needs a little dulling.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but, what pots are generally used in a bass? I have an OLP MM2 (passive stingray copy) that where the stock pots are the mini 500k ones. Are these the correct(or standard) pots for a bass as well? I ask because i don't think it would hurt to swap out the mini pots for full size ones but i'm not sure if i have the recommended value of pots to begin with.

I'd agree with that.I've tried switching them around, but i prefer them in what is called the normal way.
