the other guy in my band got the furious george CD recently..it's a bunch of covers ranging from the beetles to hendrix..
to say I was disappointed was an understatement..not in regards to the fact that it's covers..I don't mind that at all...I think it's interesting to see one of my favorites do their take on other's songs..
but the leads....they were just...well, BAD....no phrasing...just a mish mash of notes....is it that the well has run dry after so many years or that after 30 years of tearing it up, he's just not into it any more?
honestly..if I never listened to lynch before and heard his newer 'lead style' after all the good things people have said about him over the years I woulda thought that they were crazy..
I may be in the minority, but ya gotta admit, the style's changed...and in my opinion, not for the better...
I mean, the guy has forgotten more about playing good that I'm likely to ever know, but he just doesn't play things that agree with me anymore....and it seems that his lead tone has gone from being defined, punchy, ballsy, in your face in favor of being muddy, less defined and buried in the mix..
Not the first time something like this has happened *cough*METALLICA*cough*cough*
Hendrix died before he released any crap, and now he's considered a god. Same goes for Zeppelin..
I wish all the old legends would just stop throwing away their dignity and respect, and stop making more music!! Theres no use continuing when you've run your well dry!
heheh..metallica's a prime example..however, I never thought Kirk Hammet was any good anyway...lol..but the tunes were much better in the olden days! same for Maiden, etc...
I think Lynch is struggling with what direction he wants to head... Remember that awful piece of crap he put out quot;Smoke Thisquot;?? AHHHHHHHH
He is still a great player- I have seen him live twice in the last year but yea, I think may be in decline a bit. He sure doesn't know were he wants to go with his tone. His Randall deal tells me his tone isn't going to be up to par with his quot;Under Lock and Keyquot; days. Lynch is also doing the detuned stuff which I don't understand- just to tune to Eb and let it rip dude. If I wanted to hear guitars tuned to B with no mids I'd buy some crap Nu-metal.
I read somewhere that the Furious George guitar tracks were done in like two days. Not exactly an opportunity to create thoughtful guitar parts.
I found FG pretty underwhelming: mindless wanking of the variety that caused me to walk out of his Peavey Showcase at NAMM last year.

I will agree with you that Smoke This wasn't his best work, especially with some bad vocals and rap music dialed in. But it wasn't necessarilly a bad album if you'd ask for my personal opinion. The lead work was pretty awesome, in fact the solo on Hype-O is one of my favorites kind of Lynch meets Marty Friedman. If you're looking for old school 80's Metal/Rock I don't think you're in a majority as Lynch is looking to make some green out of his work not just try and amuse himself (although it does seem that way sometimes). REvolution also had some downtuned stuff, the lead work didn't really match up to his previous stuff, but the riffs were pretty cool. That Lynch Pilson record also did, but the leads were just right for that kind of music.
Back on topic, I can't remember FG very clearly, I heard a couple of songs and really didn't like them so I didn't really wanna hear everything. I might be one of the few, but I'm pretty curious what Mr Scary will think up next, I personally hope he'll reune with Oni Logan and make a Lynch Mob album that'll make our eyes pop out.

I remember him saying many years ago how those amps tear and whatnot..but this was back when they were soully solid state...
anywho, he seems to change his rig on a monthly basis..lol..I've seen him use mojave amps, he used a bogner uberschall on the lynch pilson album, and now randall?
I've only heard a few clips off of smoke this and I was less than impressed..lol

I totally agree with what you said about FG..
Peavy showcase? what was he endorsing from peavy? and I think I heard about that namm show...he wasn't really playing, just doing alotta weird whammy bar stuff....or at least, that's what I got from snippets I've over heard from it

and the tone was monstrous..then again, when yoiu're using a baratone, through a top of the line bogner and TRIPLING (yes, this is fact) the rythm tracks, you'll have that..lol

I think they were working with him on a signature amp.
His showcase was backing tracks with GL going wheedly-wheedly over the top of it. It go old really fast (though his tone was okay).
I guess that peavy deal fell through?
wheedly-wheedly...lol

Yea, that is what Lynch is doing now. There is a story behind it. A couple years ago, '03 I think, Lynch was going to jam with a make-shift band at the Dallas Guitar Show. The practice session that they were going to have didn't happen and it apparently was a real goat f--k. Different tunings and all kinds of fun. After that, Lynch said quot;no morequot; and just started using backing tracks at these events. He used backing tracks at the Crossroads festival (and missed about 1/2 of his time slot b/c he was late) but did jam with a blues band this year at the 2005 Dallas Guitar show which really surprised me.
I don't have Furious George, and haven't bought any new Lynch since Smoke This, which wasn't my cup of tea. I saw him a few weeks ago here in a smallish club here in Portland (here's the spam of my review from : localhost//forum/s...ad.php?t=44056)
Anyway, long story short, he surprised me with the ferocity of his play. He seemed to be real into it that night and I had a great time. I did not care for his tone, and I totally did not expect him to play a Telecaster all night. But, he was good enough to sign my axe for me after the show, and so made my month. He seemed genuinely friendly and grateful for our loyal support. I suppose he has to balance artistic integrity with making a living doing something that there isn't a whole large audience for, so I guess a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do.

Well, what bothered me was the wanking more than the prerecorded backings. Actually, that makes the wanking even worse in my mind because that implies that he has the same backing from showcase to showcase. He could at least invest some time into putting together something reasonably tasty.

metallica is a prime example, but personally i dont really think maiden has declined that much, still good.

they're still good performers and they play the old stuff fantastically as usually..I saw them a couple years back at MSG and all they did was play old stuff..I was in heaven..
as far as the new stuff? not possible for me to hate it any more than I already do...the new album? I won't even use it as a coaster...they're just not the same band anymore..I'd be perfectly happy for them to just tour and do old stuff over and over and over again =)
that's just my opinion of course and I don't mean to offend...just that, if I heard their new stuff having never heard their old stuff, I'd think they were horrible..
