Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting a Warmoth neck, and I'm not sure what type of fretboard to get. I love the look and feel of ebony, but I prefer the tone of rosewood. I notice that Brazillian varies a bit in appearance, and it shouldn't be too hard for Warmoth to pick out a piece that is darker in color. It's only $30 more than regular rosewood when used as a fretboard, how does it feel compared to Indian rosewood? I'm looking for something that will have a fast feel to it, kind of like ebony does. I know it won't feel exactly the same, but is Brazillian smoother and faster than regular Indian rosewood? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Ryan
I've found the lure of Brazillian Rosewood is the lure of Brazillian Rosewood.
The BR that's on old guitars has that dark, waxy, beautiful figure. But since BR has been banned since 1965, the idea of having BR on a guitar is alluring because it's BR.
I don't notice much diff in feel but I do think Brazilian fingerboards have a more complex midrange. It's one of the reasons a 50's Les Paul sounds the way it does. IMO, the diff between Brazilian and Indian is sort of like the diff between alnico 2 and alnico 5, with alnico 2 being like Brazilian...sort of. Lew
I find Brazilian to be a lot smoother sounding. That being said, I had Warmoth make me a solid Indian rosewood neck a while back, and I specifically asked for them to pick out the darkest piece they could find. I had to pay a bit extra for it, but they got me a piece that's uniformly dark chocolate brown. You might ask if they have any pieces that look like that; they should be able to help you.
