i played a '72 tele in the store. i love the tone it had. does fender sell the wide range humbuckers that are on it? does anyone know what type of magnet is used? and if fender doesnt sell the pickup, does any aftermarket pickup company make one thats exactly the same?

It's not alnico. It's cunife, used because it's the only type that could be machined into screws. You may want to try Duncan's Stag Mag, which is similar in many ways.

I've heard that aftermarket pickups are hard to find because of the larger than normal size of the pickups.

Never thought of that.

I might want to re-think my choice of neck hummer on the baritone I'm making.

But then, I want a cover on it....

That might be more labor that it's worth(pushing poles back, soldering, potting...)

what other magnet types is quot;cunifequot; close to?

also, most other alder or ash guitars with hb's sounded sweet too. would these pickups in other woods sound just as nice, or would another humbucker in an alder body get a tone just as nice, in anyones opinion?

I don't know how cunife compares to alnico or ceramic, but part of the quot;wide rangequot;-ness is the magnets as polepieces. So I'd bet a Stag Mag, a Rio Grande tallboy, or something similar would work well (I like the SM in the neck of my guitar). OR - a pickup with uneven coils; that'll give a bit less cancellation and midranginess in favor of a more balanced spectrum.
