Have a PRS I am considering selling and getting a p-90 les paul type. If I were to put phat cats in a normal PRS w/5-way switch, what are some of the wiring variations I could try, and has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks!

bump.

i am not sure i understand your question ... given that a phat cat is not a 4-wire pickup, i think that you will be limited as to the number of switch options available when using a pair of them ... i can think of 4 (n, n b - parallel, n b - series, b) ... dont know how a PRS 5 way rotary switch could do this .. i know you could do it with a more standard 4 way

good luck

ps - you might just want to sell the PRS and get a PRS soapy or LP soapy ... the guy i bought my prs from tried to convert it to a p90-ish axe by putting in some phat cats, but it just didnt float his boat so he put the stock pups back in it and sold it to me ... i think he scratched his p90 itch by getting another axe ... good luck

Phat Cats come with a single conductor braided cable. This type of cables only allow you to wire the guitar in a traditional 3way setting (no series/parallel not phase reverse) An option cound be remove the nickel cover and change the braided wire to a 2-conductor wire but I don't know if you want to go that far.

I my opinion I wouldn't care if I can fill the 5 way selector or not. A great guitar should be great with a 5way or a 3way switching. Phat cats are great pickups, very vesatile and the 3 posible combinations allow you to play almost any kind of music. Neck and bridge output is balance and they complement perfectly in tone.

So I see a few options.

1) Rotary switches ussually alow you to select how many rotary positions you want (some go from 2 to 12). If this is the case just change the rotary from 5 to 3 and rewire the guitar in the traditional fashion.

2) Leave the rotary as is adding 2 more options to the traditional switching system. This could be any of the pickups conected directly to the output, or throught a capacitor... etc

3) Replace the rotary selector with a 3way switch.

Hope it helps!

The new style PRS 5 way has a printed circuit board so it cant be modded to do anything but what it does. P-90s are single coils so there really aren't any good options for the 5 way switch.
