I purchased a used Peavey Genny Standard, which I believe was their version of the Telecaster. It's a solid poplar body, flame maple neck/fretboard, two HCS hum-cancling pups, a chrome plated fixed bridge and a three-position pickup selector switch.
The neck on this guitar is truely something to behold, but unfortunately when I play it through my Traynor WR20, with the pickup switch in the center, the sound fades in and out depending on which notes are being played. When my teacher played it through his amp we didn't seem to have this problem but the sound was unremarkable.
Anyway, I would like to upgrade to a truer Tele sound, which pups would you all recommend?
Thanks
Hey Slim; Welcome to the forum.
I have a Peavey Generation EXP, but except for the Tele-clone part, its different than your description, so this may not be much help. Mine is HSS, with a cheap basswood/sawdust/chipwood/glue/plastic fantastic finish!
I swapped in a Custom 5 bridge with a pair of tapped Quarter Pounds neck and middle, and that combo was great, but the QP's weren't quot;Tele-ishquot; enough for me. I've got a Jerry Donahue bridge/APS-1 neck combo in there now, and they're good, but not quite right for this cheap-ish body. I'm going to put the C5 back in with a Distortion neck next. And then I'm going to try out the old Peavey quot;Super Ferritequot; single-coil rails that came out of my Patriot. (Kinda like rail Phat Cats)
Anyway, the Custom 5 is a killer, twangy rich Genny bridge pup. I'll let you know how the rest goes.

I am afraid the body of my guitar is the same as yours, super light... sawdust, with a slick plastic coat on top. My Genny, is one of the first models and is a simple SS. Hmmm... not sure what to do now. I was thinking of the STL1B (B) and the STR-1(N) but I am not sure what it will sound like with the cheap (lite) body. Any idea?
While the body is cheap, its not unusable. Although, I'm going to use mine as a stepping-stone to something better when I can.
For now, I'm going to put the humbucker back in the bridge to help fill out its tone. A Custom 5, I think, makes a great Tele bridge, and I'm probably going to put a Distortion in the neck. That pup has great cleans, especially when split.
Since yours is made for singles, a Cool Rails in the bridge might be pretty good. In fact, I'm going to try one myself as soon as my Tele pup-plate gets here from Stew-Mac. Any one of the other single-sized humbuckers would help richen your neck. A Lil 59, would be be cool, or even a second Cool Rails. I Haven't tried any of the others, but perhaps others will chime in.
I'll let you know how the Cool Rails bridge, and the C5/DD go.

Edit: It occured to me, as I typed that, the whole reason I ordered the Stew-Mac Tele plate was because they don't actually make the Cool Rails for the Tele. I don't know if you'ld want to mess with fabrication or not. They do make a Hot Rails for Tele, but I haven't tried one. Still, I'll let you know how my CR experiment goes.
