Hi there, If i wanted to change my stock Peavey Classic 50 speakers with better ones would the tone improve alot? What differences would you hear?
I would like to hear a smoother less grainy sound especially in the bass frequencies, and less harshness at higher volumes.
I have perfomed all the mods on the blue guitar site and have changed the tubes for the first time in 10years to JJ Telsa's and the sound has improved alot already from stock.
Thanks Dylan
Yes, significantly. I would say there is as much, or more tone in your speakers, as in you pups (proprotion-wise). A few guys around here like green backs for their peavey classics. I would personally look at weber, they make great speakers and have great prices.

I agree totally. I much prefer the tone from my Marshall 2x12 cab since I swapped the G12-75Ts for a V30 and a G12H-30. Investigating different speaker options is something people often overlook when seeking a change in tone.
Try the Eminence tonker/texas heat for cleans or the governor/manowar for metal or wizard/governor for rock
Eminence has a great line of replacement speakers that really let you fine tune your tone depending on what exactly you want.
Eminence, Celestion, and Weber these are all speaker brands, but how do you know which brand to go for are there certain models which suit 2x12 cabs more than others.
Which ones do you guys like. I hear alot about the celestion vintage 30s' im guessing they would be really expensive.
If you got , you can read about the different tones each speaker has. Very briefly, it's like this.
G12T-75 - 75w. Stock in Marshall cabs for years and years...in the basic 1960 A amp; B cabs. They have a tight low end, and tight crisp high range, and a somewhat scooped midrange. This is why Marshall puts them in cabs...Marshalls are mid heavy amps, and that kind of balances the speaker. Tonewise, think late 70's metal, 80's rock and metal...like that.
V30 - 60w. much smoother in the highs, slightly looser in the lows to my ears, which makes them sound slightly darker, but the mids are VERY present in this speaker. It's much smoother then most of the other Celestion speakers. Great for warming up a cold amp or cab.
G12H30 - 30w. Probably one of the biggest low ends in speakers. It's the J-Lo of speakers. Smooth highs, mids warmer than the G12T but not quite as pronounced as the V30. Great for some low end thump while still giving you nice highs and prominent mids.
Greenback - Lowest wattage (25w) speaker. Has an early breakup and a very quot;woodyquot; sound for lack of a better term. These were standard in Marshall cabs for many, many years prior to the G12T's, and are still in some of the upper end and vintage series Marshall Cabs. These will really color your sound, but in a pleasing way. Billy Gibbons for one is a big user of them. Great sizzle.
There are a ton of other speakers out there, but these are the ones that the marjority are flavored like. None are better or worse, just different.
For the tone change you're asking for, I would combine one V30 and one G12-H. Open back cabs lose a lot of bass and treble frequencies out the back. The G12 will help give you back some of your low end, but in a good way.
Thanks for your help Jeff
