Hi, I have an alder 1 pu strat with a Maple neck and a Floyd. Currently, I have a Screamin' Demon Trembucker in it. I am really quite pleased with it. Lately, I've been interested in the EVH 78 pickup made by the custom shop. Which of the two pickups has better high end? I'm looking for Brown, with this guitar. From what I've read, the Demon is about 10K and the EVH is 9 something. Can anyone comare the two for my application? I use a Mojave Peacemaker which is voice a little darker than a Super Lead.
From those sound clips, those Mojaves seem quite amazing...I just ordered a Plexi from a handbuilder after hearing the Mojave Plexi 45 clips...
Sorry I cant comment on the pickup selection, but I'll BUMP for you!
The Demon is a pretty toppy pickup...the 78 (EVH) on the other handm is a bit thicker sounding...it has normal slugs and poles where the Demon has screws and allen heads (that make it brighter) and the 78 is an Alnico II vs the Demon's Alnico 5...A2 tends to be softer in the treble and bass and strong in the mids where A5 is tighter in the bass, stronger in the treble and a bit more sucked back in the mids. Im gonna bet that you will be looking at a pretty strong difference.
I'm just so close to the tone I'm looking for I can taste it. I just wonder of the '78 has it. I think the Demon sounds good in this type of guitar. I seek to have highs a bit more present and more clear, may be a bit more mid and equal thump.
I would suggest neither and trying a DiMarzio Fred...

Here's a cool mod you could try to get you closer....Go to an A2 or A3 magnet and replace all of the hex screws with standard nickel screws...This will give you more mids, less toppy highs, rounder, sweeter tone...You might like it?

I use both of these pickups and they are so very close.....Both A5 and both at around 10k...Very similar, though the Fred has mis-matched coils leading to more harmonic content and I'm not sure about the SD's coils?
The '78 sounds like sort of a cross between a 59 and Custom Custom.
Everyone's taste is different, but I also use EL-34 amps, and I prefer the Custom 5 for the sound you're talking about. It still has that vintage tone, but is a little beefier sounding, and the lows are nice and tight. The treble is still similar to a 59 or Screamin Demon.
Thanks, I tried the Custom 5 recently in my Les Paul. It was a nice sounding pickup but a bit hot, and I needed a better balance with my Peraly Gates Neck. I did not try it in the Strat, because it was a gold cover and I opted for a '59 for the Paul.
I am specifically searching for an opinion on the EVH compared to the Screamin' demon. Also, I assume that the custom shop would make the EVH in a trembucker size for the price?
Well, I went ahead and ordered the '78 in a trembucker. The Demon has served me well but I'm just tired of it. I hope this is a match for the instrument so I can obsess about something else for a change.
