I'm in need of pickups for a Les Pual Custom clone. Last weekend I tried to do the Peter Green mod and it turns out that somehow the magnet is affixed to the stock pickup. In an attempt to dislodge it I managed to mung up the pickup and it's now at about 10% power.
The backstory to this guitar is that when I got it that past Spring it always sounded a little dark. I potted the pickups over the Summer and they got even darker. I could EQ some brightness in there but it wasn't long that i realized that it just wasn't going to work out.
Both pickups are (were) around 8.0k, not terribly strong. So the idea of replacing them seems like the route to go.
I'd like to do this on the cheap as I was laid off a while ago and am trying to keep some money around.
I would consider just replacing the neck pickup but I have heard that pickup covers don't transfer well from one pikcup to another. Additionally I would like to have the pickups match tonally.
Stew-Mac has a set of pickups that are comprable to Duncans 59's (a pickup I really enjoy the sound of) that would clock in at under a hundred. Vintage Vibe Guitars has a P-90 offering coming in at a little over a hundred, which I would be willing to go for if I knew more about them.
Anyone have any good low-dough pickup suggestions? Anyone care to offer their thoughts on the pickups I mentioned?

Used 59's are all over the place on E-bay.
Yes....there are plenty of them.
But buying 2 of them with the gold covers is a little more than I really feel like spending right now.
You can get the uncovered versions, then, as finances allow, purchase the covers from Lew and install them at your leisure.

Thats what I would recommend as well. Get white bobbins (I like the look in Customs) or black if you want to be unassuming and then when finances allow the additional 40 bucks to be spent go grab some covers.
