These days if you order a Gibson, you are quite likely to get a quot;caved topquot; Les Paul!

Hamer.

Hamer, Heritage

EDWARDS!!

heritage (see avatar). hand made, but experts in the US, to order.

I know I mentioned Hamer, but to be honest, it's still possible to get a good LP from Gibson. I love mine. You just have to look for the one that fits.

I think he might be more concerned with their business ethics than with their quality control.

Hmm.... well this isn't really a les paul, and my opinion is biased but oh well, My suggestion is a Godin LG signature, somewhat les paul-esque, but is more versatile, it has a 5 way switch for 2 humbuckers, your options on the switch being POSITION 1: bridge POSITION 2: split bridge POSITION 3: both humbuckers POSITION 4: split neck POSITION 5: full neck

These ae great guitars in my opinion, they can be had for MUCH lesser than the price of a gibson, have more versatility, they are canadian/US made, plus it comes with locking tuners, and a string thru body, and SD pickups bridge and neck, a modified custom custom in the bridge, and a Jazz2 for the neck,
anyways,
there's mine(like i said, my opinion is biased) its 2004 with a AA maple top.

sorry about the rant

on topic: yeah, heritage if you are talking $1000 (new) ... if you are talking lower dollar, folks rave about the tokai copies and the agiles too .. perfect for modding and dont cost an arm and a leg

cheers

offtopic: wow speed demon .. that is one pretty guitar ....

Tokai
Epiphone
ESPMy vote would be for the Burny or Grecos. Both guitars can be had for low-dough and are close enough to be vintage.

Out of all of these LP's and including Gibsons (when they actually build a good model of the Les Paul) how would Edwards rate in terms of general quality.Greco

I have a Heritage that I picked up used for 800, I proceeded to rip out the Schaller pups, bridge, and tailpiece. I put in Tonepros, and Duncans and am nothing but impressed. The pots and caps are high quality, as well as the standard grovers, and the craftsmanship is great as well. It is made like the vintage LPs with the thinner body binding, vintage style frets, mine has a more modern profile neck kind of a 50s meets 60s Gibson. But another cool thing it is made with the vintage equipment.

I have played a Monaco Elite briefly and was very impressed. I recommend choosing another neck pup. Hamer put a Custom in the neck and a Custom Custom in the Bridge, I'd choose the one I wanted in the bridge and sell the other.

I am GASing for a Japanese Tokai

Try buying a nice used Gibson Les Paul off ebay.

Don't get sucked in by all the anti-Gibson sentiments. It's a disease of misinformation being parrotted by players who don't own the real deal. They're simply a large company that makes a lot of guitars, and therefore the number of imperfect ones is greater than a company that only turns out a fraction of that many guitars.
If those guitars were actually better, you'd see players selling their Gibsons first, when money is tight, not the copies.

This is my Diodati 59Q.
It's made in Japan.
Features
Honduran mahogany 2 piece back.
1 piece Honduran mahogany neck set neck . ('59 profile)
Carved maple top.
Dark indian rosewood fretboard. (not dyed)
Gotoh tuners and bridge.
Medium neck tenon. (longer than Gibson production. extends to neck pickup cavity. just doesn't have the tongue extending into bottom of cavity like a historic)
Acrylic lacquer finish.

I do suggest swapping the Gotoh pickups out to your prefered pickups.
The Gotohs were too bland.

Otherwise, with a pickup swap, it has great sustain, dynamics, depth, and clarity. Action is great. Fit and finish is excellent. Plays and feels great.
Does the LP thing just fine.

Oh, I would also suggest looking for a Dean EVO Deluxe or Premium.
These are Czech made. Very well made, solid built guitars.

One more.
You may like the Fernandes Ravelle as well.

Very well made. Quality hardware and Duncan pickups.
Mahogany neck and body.
Carved maple top.
A little tighter, more compressed tone than my Diodati.
But, still has a wonderful tone.My Ravelle Dluxe.
