I have one of these, a beautiful seafoam green Daytona. The pickups are Duncan APS-1's...alnico 2. Did most Daytona's come stock with these pickups? There's another one on Ebay and it too is listed as having the APS-1's. Just asking out of curiousity...I like them but I've replaced them with the new Duncan Stack Plus noiseless pickups. This will be my gigging quot;Stratquot; and I really like not having to deal with quot;humquot;.
Thanks, Lew
I'm interested in what you think of those stacks and when they're available-cost?
hey lew all of the daytona's i have seen / played have had aps-1's in them . how do you like it ? i had one for a while and miss it .
I'll answer both questions:
1. I think the new Stack Plus Pickups are the finest noiseless Strat pickups I've ever tried! I had a small hand in the development of these pickups but only in that I made some suggestions to Evan that I felt would make them sound closer in tone to the 40 year old original pickups in my '63 Strat. The Duncan Company carried out those suggestions, mostly having to do with raising the middle polepieces a little more so they'd be closer to the strings and give a little more snap and treble to the tone, and I'm crazy about 'em.
2. I love the way my Daytona plays and sounds. Tremendously comfortable neck...like the neck on a zillion dollar James Tyler or Tom Anderson or other high end boutique Strat. I wish it was a little lighter in weight but the guitar is very lively and resonant and I love playing it.
I'm kind of a Hamer freak though...I've owned a bunch of Hamers although I only have the Daytona and my Monoco now.
Yeah, Lew, as far as I know, all of them had APS-1's (staggered pole pieces). Mine did.
So they all came with APS-1's? They sounded a little thin and bright in this guitar...I liked 'em but didn't love 'em. I had APS-2's in another Strat, one that I gave to my nephew, and I think I liked the APS-2's more. I had them with a Twangbanger bridge and the tone seemed a little thicker. Could have been diffs in the two guitars of course, but that's interesting because generally I prefer raised and staggere polepieces for the neck and middle pickups. I seem to be starting to appreciate a little thicker and warmer tone from my Strat pickups. Maybe because I've been playing my Strat with the first version of Duncan Stack Plus pickups all summer and fall and they DO have a little bit warmer tone than the Duncan Antiquitys, Fralin Vintage Hots and original '63 Strat pickups in my other Strats...
I hope that you know that you're killing me with all of this talk about the new stacks. I have Classic Stacks in mine now and I'm dying to hear the new versions.
