I have tried the Duncan Distortion, Demon, JB, and the Full shred. My guitar is a maple body Hamer Californian (yeah I know maple is bright). I play metal but I want a pickup that can do anything. I want a low end chunk but also want upper mids that go waaahhhhh. Is the custom custom or triple custom something I should try. Anyone tried them on a maple guitar?

Welcome to the forum!

I got a laugh out of the Maple Body Full Shred combo ... I can understand why it'd be too bright for your tastes. I use it in Alder, Poplar and Mahogany with Rosewood and Ebony (only combined with Mahogany bodies) fingerboards. Most of the complaints of the Full Shred make me believe that the enduser forgot to re-tweak their amp's EQ settings. But in your case I don't think that'd help you anyway.

Unfortunatly I'm not too familiar with the Custom series, so I can't really help you there but I do believe the Custom Custom would be a better match to what you're looking for. I wonder how the Dimebucker would respond to a maple body? Who knows. Hopefully someone can read this and give you a more helpful answer.

I would suggest the parallel axis trembucker. Nice thick tone that should work well in that guitar. You might also want to consider the invader.

Those are good choices, so is the Rio Grande BBQ. The CC doesn't have any low end, and the C5 has scooped mids, so I would avoid those. I like the BBQ because it has a nice amount of bass and midrange, along with softer highs.

A Dimarzio Tone Zone/Air Norton combo should do metal and shred pretty well in a maple bodied guitar. the Breed set is considerably great as well.

the full shred is quite a trebly pickup, though its my favourite pickup you should try something with less treble and high mids to tame that down a bit. looking at the tone chart and the fact that you want to play metal i suggest you take a look at the invader.

I'd go with the Custom 5.

You might want to try an SH-13, but that's just me.Keep rockin.

try a 250k pot too. That will tame the highs a bit as well.

I would normally suggest a Demon, but you've already tried those.
I have a Demon in both of my maple guitars with no ill effects.
You can always try a Alnico II Pro, I guess, but you will really have to goose the gain to play metal with it.
You might wanna look into a Bare Knuckle Miracle Man, as well.

What value tone cap do you have going, is the pu wired to the tone? The change you want may be done just by messing with cap values. Very easy and dramatic results..
