hey guys,
Does anyone here leave the locking nut off their floyd rose? I'm thinking about taking the locking nuts off one of my floyds rose equipped guitars so that I can switch between different tunings. Are there any negative impacts? What about positive? I think it would be easier to set up and stay in tune... am I wrong? Is this a good idea or a bad one?
thanks,
I think the only answer you would get would be that it would be a bad idea. For 2 reasons: 1) Because it would take a very long time to tune it to an alternative tuning. 2) The bridge would either pull up or go down, making for unstable tuning.
The only advantage i could possibly think of is that you might get an increase in sustain as the strings will be able to vibrate all the way to the tuners and the headstock. But the compromise in a tiny amount of sustain greatly outweighs the tuning problems you would get.
Bad idea. Without the nut locked down, you won't have proper intonation, so no matter what tuning you use, it wouldn't work.
The bridge would also move. I would get a guitar without a FR if that's what you want to do.
Thanks guys... you've given a reason to go guitar shopping... again!
GAS here I come...
Now, if you wanted to convert it over to another type of nut, it would be OK as long as you blocked the trem from going backwards! You can get an LSR nut that comes with an adapter with it to mount it on Floyd Rose necks! Between the locking bridge, Blocked trem, and the LSR it sould provide good stability also!!
Well mmm, I haven't had mine locked in about 2 weeks haha. Think I might need to go fix that, go learning!
I need to get the truss rod set.
A Floyd nut untightened will not mess up the intonation. I do it on my Kramer sometimes. I just know not to use the bar else it goes out of tune. The intonation is determined by the first point of contact on the nut to the saddle (we all knew this though, right?). So, if you have a flat-mount Floyd, you won't have tuning issues any different than any other flat-mount bridge. If it's floating, that's where the issues come in so either block it, like theodie mentioned, or just get a guitar without a Floyd.
