Hey guys,

How's Tony getting that fat, hairy distortion sound for the solo on Paranoid? I gotta have that!

maybe dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight had revealed some tweaking secrets...

just kidding...no idea. Check out that light gauge string use though

I'm pressuming he used a boost on the record, or switched to the neck pickup. I checked my live DVD and I didn't see anything out of the blue. Just a couple of guesses

On the actual Paranoid album he used Laney amps and a quot;Ring Modulatorquot; for that nasty sound he got for the solos...

John

How 'bout one of these

Paranoid 70s Style Distortion

If I remember right he used a modified Treble Booster tweaked for more output and he always plugged into the 'Bass' input of his Laney amps.

Craig

A rangemaster and ring modulator. the rangemaster is really ugly sounding, and the ring mod is responsible for that octave effect- not one of his best tones. Actually, I don't think he hit his 'stride' tone-wise till Heaven amp; Hell.
His tone was all over the map on all the Ozzy albums, although there are some good ones (and good playing) on Technical Extacy and Never Say Die.

I'm not entirely convinced he used an Octave effect on the solo of Paranoid. To me it sounds like he double tracked the solos (but played slightly different things) and had 1 of the guitars lower down in the mix.

Craig

I don't actually remember seeing Laney Amps around at that time. Tony DID tune down a step and in the actual quot;Paranoidquot; video, I seem to remember seeing Orange amps. They had a frequency boost around the 100 Hz area that would flap your pant legs.

To me, it sounds like the track was doubled with 2 guitars tuned differently. But both guitars sound like they have that fuzzy distrotion. I've tried fuzz (double muff) and other distortion pedals (TS9DX amp; DS-1) and none of those come close.

Laney amps have been around for ions! I'm thinkin around 69 or 70...Iommi used the Laney Supergroup amp..Another Marshall copy...

The closest thing I ever heard to the paranoid period was an SG with dirty fingers/500T pups cranked into an early 70s Orange amp/cab with a power soak to absorb ALL the freakin' watts when it was cranked to 11!Now that was an awesome rig, the other guitarist in an old band I played in had it.

I think early on he got his tone from using fuzz effects with germanium transistors.

Sounds like stereo tracking is involved as well... the right channel is washed out with a hint of of actual notes, but mostly fuzz. The left channel is prominent, fuzzy, with a slightly scooped sound.

You're hearing recording techniques, but I remember Iommi saying he used a ring modulator in an article I read....No mention of the brand though..

John

Agrees with John....hmm no one must be using those things anymore
I gotta get one again, love ringmodulators.

I always loved the solo Iommi did in the studio version of Paranoid, but the modulator really made the solo unclear and harder to figure out...It's really nasty sounding effect...My Fender Cyber Twin has that effect built in,but I don't use it...

John

Hehe yeah...I do love a screamin' strat on the neck with one of those things on....turn down the volume and get even more spacy effects
Lol I love acidmusic too much sometimes.
