ive been wanting to get a nice chorus pedal..something along the sound of john frusciante
i know he uses the old boss chorus.. there are the new ones theres the voodoolab which i hear is great but too pricey.. theres electroharmonix..
what are the good and bad things about each?
right now im using the voodoolab sparkle drive, line 6 echo park for delay , and boss tremolo..
Check ebay for an Ibanez SC10 Super Chorus from the 80's. I got mine for $30 last year and have been very happy with it. It's NOT digital and sounds great. Actually all the pedals in this series sound wonderful but no one is hip to them...oops shouldn't of said anything!
I love my EH Small Clone - it sounds way warmer and more intense than other pedals. It's only problem is the depth switch - but those two depth presets do really make sense. And if you're not scared of soldering you can mod it very easily to a depth knob.
john frusciante uses a Boss CE-1, the catch is tht these bring around $500.00 now! The VooDoo Labs chorus is very close, a Boss CE-2 is also very, very close. There are lots of chorus pedals that will get you close...the EH stuff and the MR stuff has a different sound, but all Boss stuff is kinda based on that old CE-1. The Ibanez SC-10 that was mentioned is also very good...
Choralflange / Voodoolab analog chorus / Boss CE-2
These ones sounded dmn good for me:
BOSS CE1 - it has THE sound. Price, either
BOSS CH1 - Dmn good price. Littlebit colder than THE sound but it's still awesome
Ibanez SC10 - pretty near to THE sound but notice that it was produced in the '80s and they weren't as massively made as Boss units so mechanical problems can appear. I know for sure, I have one. It produces some (not so annoying) noise.
Rocktron Tsunami - It is close to THE sound, somewhere about the BOSS CH1: cold yet good. It has the lowest noise among the ones I listed plus Rocktron packed a pretty useful ambient delay for mega-fat sounds, 2-in-1 design. The switches produce some POP when they are stomped but it's not very annoying. The chassis is military grade so you can do any phgysical torture with it, it will take all easily. I've tested in real life situatons
I like the Boss CE-2 for a mono pedal or the Danolectro Cool Cat for a stereo pedal. Lew
The Boss CE-20 has a CE-1 sim on it.....
I currently use a Small Clone, and I'll soon be getting a CE-20.
Much as I like Boss pedals, the small clone is hard to beat - especially having been endorsed by one Mr Kurt Cobain on his most famous track
I use an old Boss CE-2.
I also like what I've heard of the small clone. Very ncie and warm. The old Ibanez chorus pedals were pretty good too
I hate digital chorus...well..digital anything really..I can deal with and own a digital delay, but IMO digital modulation effects sound soooo sterile..no warmth at all.
EDIT: I uses to really love the TC chorus. Never had one, but man was that a great chorus in it's day.
Boss CE-2 Chorus or an EH Small Clone reissue are both great sounding anolog chorus. The Boss CE-2 will get you close to John's chorus sound as the CE-2 IS the CE-1 in a compact pedal without the other features ( intensity, stereo, level, high/low, vibrato and internal power supply that the CE-1 had in its bigger enclosure. Roland took the internal circuitry of the CE-1 and put it in the CE-2 to offer a straight forward chorus pedal.
1982 Boss CE-2 ChorusI wouldn't trade my TC Electronics chorus for anything.
I got a used Marshall SV1 - SuperVibe Chorus. It can also do vibrato. FWIW.
Boss CE-2
Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus. I'm happy with it as it's pretty transparent tone wise.
Retro-Sonic makes a CE-1 clone (I believe it's around $250).
I really like the Boss Chorus Pedals i have. One is a newer one, a Boss Essembly or called something like that-(it's not the super Chorus) and the old Boss Dimension C pedal
The Dimension C pedal is kind of cool as it has the 4 preset buttons. The 2nd button is the winner. I like the other Boss pedal for more controll over the effect, but the persets on the Dimension C is cool. I bought it used a few years ago for a cheap price compaired to the EBay prices. I had one back in the 80's but sold it and the DM2 pedal off in 1989.... Along with a good Marshall....... I wanted the ADA set up and i never got it. I spent the cash i got for my gear and ended up going 2 years without a good guitar or amp. If i could of only gone back in time.....

I use a danelectro cool cat chorus its okay but the speed sucks on it

I have one of these too... I'm not a fan of fast rates so this thing is OK for me. I REALLY like the sound a lot more than I thought I would. Probably the best mono chorus I've tried yet. The 18v power supply is a ***** to get around but oh well.
I stole this off of the net, it's the same model as mine. It's perfect for Nirvana, if that tells you anything. It's also an Ibanez.
