The Fred, Evo-2 and Evo have quot;tone graphsquot; on the DMZ site with
mids higher than the highs and lows. I know the Fred is known for
tons of harmonics and a broken wawa sound.

JB was Duncans pickup with the most mids in the vocal range. But
the tone chart is nothing like those on the DMZ site, and DD or CC
actually look closer to the DMZ tone charts for these three.

I know this is unscientific stuff, but I have a JB, want more broken wawa
harmonics with less output and thought that this would lead me to Fred
or Evo-2.

Appealling to the boards wise ears, thanks, and recognizing that I
will eventually buy something and think it sounds great, for awhile...

If you want the WAH vocal tone - Dimarzio ALWAYS wins. It's a recipe and tone thing. I am gettin a bad reputation on this site of comparing everything to cars, women, and food. That being said - the JB versus the Fred, it's like 2 different restaurants with different recipes for the same chicken. In LA you can eat 5 different Burritos and they all taste different due to the ingredients.

That being said, Dimarzios have a more 80s rock clarity to them that work well with lots of effects. Duncans are a more classic , old school tone to my ears. I am not saying one is better than they other - I LOVE BOTH!

For the WAH WAH vocal thing, clarity - you gotta go Dimarzio. If you want power you go EVO, if you want sweetness a la Satch you go FRED. The CC and the JB have a feel and tone totally different than Dimarzio. I will say that I feel the Dimarzio site is UNBELIEVABLE ACCURATE in how they describe their pickups, and their endorsers truly have the tone of a lot of their pickups (ie Satch and Vai on their records).

I find Tone Zone to have a fairly pronounced WAH tone. I don't know how it compares to Fred or Evo in that aspect though. As far as s, I have not come across anything that has a real strong WAH tone. Pearly Gates is probably the closest you are going to get but not really. To my ears, JB does not have any WAH-like tone at all.

I agree, the JB has NO WAH tone. The WAH vocal thing is a very Dimarzio trait.

My invader has loads of that wah tone which makes since because its a modified JB. That wah tone sounds so cool for leads which is why shredders like Dimarzios so much.

thanks a lot. Any comments on the difference between Fred, EVO-2 and
EVO? I'll be mixing this with more vintage neck tones (LP with Seth neck),
so I was thinking of the Fred because of the output and A5 magnet. But
the EVO-2 has gotten some rave reviews, I am just leary because it may
be too hot and I have not liked ceramics in the past.

I think the WAH thing isn't so much a WAH sound....it's more of the top end being rolled off on alot of those pickups making them very thick and warm sounding with alot of mids usually. That's not all Dimarzios of course but a good amount of them.
