I am searching for a guitar compressor, and 3 names keep coming up: The Carl Martin compressor, the Barber, and the HomeBrew CPR. Does anyone have any experience with any/all of them?

Depends on what kinda compressor you want, before I say anything, besides we have a few new things coming up on the compfront...

I'm not familiar with the Barber (though they've got a great reputation) so I can't really vouch for the them. But the Carl Martin is great. I don't think Carl Martin make badd stuff, but they do charge you. I haven't used the Homebrew either but I've got the Power Screamer Overdrive pedal which is absolutely awesome. Have you checked out the Harmony Central reviews? If not then follow this link.

from : localhost/just scroll to the manufacturers names and look the pedals up. I haven't checked up on these particular pedals but this site is a good way of getting a better insight into a lot of gear. Hopes this helps

I'm looking for a vintage style compressor, Rid; something fat and warm to use when I track the guitars for my next album; I'm also interested to know if CM would make me a unit that's in a rack enclosure instead of a stomp box. Ultimately, I will be getting 2 mono units.

Thanx for the link and comments benjaturner! I own a Big D and Dos Mos myself. Simply amazing products! I wanna keep an open mind, tho.

Twilight, what's the Big D like? I asked Joel at HBE and he said it sounded similar to the Power Screamer but with more gain, and a bit brighter. I've been looking for a straight up distortion pedal to complete my dirty sounds and the two main contenders at the moment at the Big D and the Pro Co Rat, probably the vintage. What do you think?

I'm guessing the Big D, as a stand alone pedal, is better than any Rat. But if the Big D is just going to sound like my Power Screamer then I can't see the point.

I use a Barber Tone Press and I love it! I tried it against a Carl Martin and I really prefer the Tone Press. The blend control really makes it unique because you can vary the amount of clean amp; compressed signal, so you can get a totally squashed sound or a very subtle effect. It’s an awesome pedal and it’s priced much less than most other boutique pedals, but it beats them all on every level IMHO.

Cheers,

CJ

Vintage, well it can do that boing boing some players love, and you can set it from mega squeeze to totally blend it in with your amps own sound.
Rackmount yeah we can do that.
It could probally also get a parallel knob if you like, nothing wild about that.

Part 1 of my review on the Big D from : localhost//forum/s...amp;highlight=HBE
It's a long one!!

The Rat? The Rat is a joke compared to the Big D! It even ate my Full-Drive 2 for breakfast.

Okay, that sounds really cool, Rid, thanx

Very interesting stuff there; thanx for the post.
I wonder if Barber would make a rack mount enclosure, as well. I will get in contact with 'em and see.

1 for the Barber Tone Press. It sounds fantastic, and is silent as far as I can tell, unlike the Boss CS-3, which adds a lot of hiss. The Tone Press definitely falls on the side of a transparent compressor, at least out of the box, but I believe that there's an internal pot or switch which lets you make it more squashed sounding. You can't beat it for the price. I got mine from here: from : localhost/guitarx.com/ I'm not affiliated with them, but they were very friendly and had free shipping, and I believe in recommending businesses who provide great service.

Thanx, MikeRocker; I will need rack mount units made, so I will def. get in touch with Barber directly.
