Can you hook a head up to combo and just use the speaker(s) in the combo?

Sure, why not? I run my small 20 watter into the speakers of my Marshall combo all the time. Just make sure that the combo's lead aren't hooked up at the same time, although I doubt that would hurt anyway, just don't try to run both amps into the same speakers at the same time.

also be sure that the power rating of the speakers can handle the power from the head. and make sure you can match up the impedence. should work just fine though.

Could I run a DSL 50 head through a Marshall AVT50 Combo? How do you disconnect the AVT50 sound and just get the DSL sound?

Sorry,I don't know how the AVT's are wired, if it's internal or external, but I don't think you would like the sound of the AVT speaker with the DSL anyway. THe AVT speaker is a very clean sounding speaker, and most all tube marshall's sound better with a speaker that imparts some coloration. (12/75, greenback, V30, etc)

I actually put a Vintage 30 in my AVT50 to improve the sound.

There is this wire coming out from the rear into the preamp of the amp. Use the same wire and connect it to the head, shouldn't be a problem. But the wire is kindda short, not sure if its long enough to reach the head

Would a DSL50 be too much for one Vintage 30? I'm just trying to get a decent sound without having to buy a 4x12 Marshall Cab...

^The new vintage 30s are actually 60 watts, so no worries there.

Between the combo's speakers and chassis, cut the 2 wires, if they don't disconnect. Solder a female 1/4quot; plug to the speaker side, and a male plug to the chassis side. Put the head on the combo, and use a speaker cable from the head to the combo's speaker female jack. Make sure the Ohms are set to be equal, and don't turn on the combo, only the head. That's how to do it.

I didn't have a female 1/4quot; handy and sacrificed a speaker cable by cutting it in half and soldering male quick connects to one side and female quick connects to the other. The female quick connects attach to speaker lugs.

Actually this could pose a problem if you crank the amp. If you do I think the output could possible be 30 or something like that above 50watts. As long as you keep the lower you'll be safe.

Actually, most new Speakers handle quite a bit more than they're rated, but you hear when the speaker'S at the end of his power handling anyway... so just turn it up in small steps

I run a 50 watt tube combo through a Vintage 30 with no problems...

I've done it with my Fender amps many times. You can buy a 1/4quot; coupling jack. It's used to connect two quot;guitarquot; cords together and make them into one longer cord. Radio Shack sells them. You plug the speaker plug into one end and the speaker cords from the amp into the other end. It looks sort of like a chrome or black plastic tube about 3quot; long with a 1/4quot; input or hole on each end. Lew

I actually just took the chassis out of my AVT50 with no problem. All I had to do was cut one off one of those plastic ring things (you know, those ones they use instead of handcuffs on cops sometimes) and wiggle out this one circuit thingy. As far as I know I didn't ruin anything, which is pretty cool. All I have to do is slide it back in and plug that one circuit thing in for it to work. That's pretty damn cool. Looks kinda like a cab with a big hole in the top now lol

Just remember that those speaker power ratings are casual usage, it's not going to survive if you're chugging a Drop-A string at maximum volume, you'll blow out the speaker easily.
