Other than being scatterwound, the EVH specs (specifically the magnet and resistance) are pretty close to the Pearly Gates. However I don't recall seeing mention of the Pearly as an apt choice for those in pursuit of the EVH sound. Does the Pearly, for some reason, not lend itself to the EVH sound?
Thanks.
The PG and the EVH sound so much different. The EVH is alot warmer and the PG has this whole bright sounding thing going on. Your best bet is the 59, the EVH or the Custom Custom. The 59 works better for some era's of Van Halen and the CC and the EVH for others. BTW, the CC sounds very close to an EVH! I have owned both and would honestly say, save your money and buy the CC instead.
Personally, I saved my money and went for the Custom/Custom. Actually, I bought 3 of them. As soon as I install them, I'll let you guys know what I think. As far as the Pearly Gates, they were great pickups, but not quite my cup of tea. They are awefully bright, which doesn't do it for me at all. Great harmonics and cut through like a mofo, though. In an extremely dark guitar, I might feel differently. But I tried them in my Hamer Special FM, which has a pretty big slab of maple on the top adding to the top end. The PG just didn't do it for me in that axe.
Thanks for the info. I happen to have a spare '59 lying around, with a cost of zero dollars--I think I'll give that one a shot.
