I was just over looking at Warmoths neck and body blanks on there site for custom guitars..... It's almost better to have them do all the machining on there CNC machines... $65 USA for an Alder body blank yet a fully shaped Alder body can be had for double that in the thrift shop.... Mind you it is quality wood and they machine it just right but it aint cheap.... Think i'll make a trip out to a lumber store i know that sells Alder to guitar makers... But it's a 1 1/2 hour drive from here

That's pretty much the going rate for alder guitar blanks over the net, the last few years, although I believe Carvin's blanks cost less than that. It's nice to be able to weigh and pick your own peice though.

I'm lucky i work at a highschool and i can use the wood shop there to plane and rough cut boards for guitar bodies.. I was just shocked at the price Warmoth is charging.... I guess it does take a lot of man hours to plane. joint and glue a body blank together..... and they do kiln dry a lot of there own wood and i do know it's premium wood also.. The sad part is for us Canadians the exchange rate and duty taxes kill us buying stuff in the States

Yep....and it takes electricity to run the jointer and plane, and the truck to the post office needs gas and costs insurance.... a lot more factors than one might think, this is just the tip of the iceberg

ya i hear ya... There is a place in Canada here that will ship me Alder body blanks all nicly machined for about a total of $80 Canadian with shipping costs..... but if i drive out to the place and buy the lumber and plane glue myself i can build 3 bodies for the same money.. so i guess i'll go that route...... Saddly i do not have acess to a thickness Sander like some of these large lumber stores use...

No thickness sander = Plane the back and do an archtop

I've always wanted to build an archtop!!! Maybe a Soloist type with a set neck! I've only made Fender knock offs so far and an SG i started but never finnished yet.......

Been also thinking of making a homemade Jackson neck for my 94 imported Reverse Dinky..... Never tried to make a Jackson style neck before
