Im probably gonna get a set of fralins for my les paul off Lew, and i was just wondering how they were when split because i want to add some versatility to my les paul...?

Man, cant believe how little i post on here these days, i used to be a junkie and now im just too busy most of the time!!! Just a bit

Cheers guys, hope everyone is well

Bump, someone must know about these.....Lewwwwww

To my ear, at least in the bridge position, any vintage output humbucker (which is the type Fralin makes almost exclusively) is going to be a little thin-sounding for two reasons:

1) Unlike a Strat single coil, which is slanted, the screw coil is closer to the bridge from the 2nd to 6th strings, where it will pickup more treble and less bass.

2) One coil from a vintage output pickup ( /-8.0k) is about 4k, much weaker than your typical 6.5 to 7.5 Strat single coil.

You might want to consider wiring your LP for spin-a-split, which is a mod that effectively allows you to have a separate volume dial for the second coil. You can dial in just as much of the second coil as you want and have every sound from pure coil-split to full-on humbucker and everything in between (think P90 or minihumbucker-like sounds).

Another Fralin option, you could order a Fralin Unbucker which has deliberately mismatched coils. Fralin will wind a humbucker up to 10k, so if you wanted, say, an 8.5k total DC resistance, you could have one coil at 5k and the other at 3.5k so you have a stronger single coil tone in split mode. Of course, mismatched coils will give a more single coil-ISH tone even with the both coils operating in series at full steam. (Which is pretty much behind the idea of the Unbucker to begin with.)

The Fralin HB's use an alnico 4 magnet which, to my ears, has more mids than alnico 5 but more bass and treble than alnico 2. They are very articulate...more articulate than than most other humbuckers. But they are also very ballsy. They are wound to compliment that alnico 4 magnet. Anyways, I've tried several sets and the split tones from the 8K neck pickup were very nice. Again, more bass than alnico 2 and more mids than alnico 5. My Fralin bridge humbucker was a 9.5K pickup so split I had a 4.75K single coil. 4.75K is a little weak for a bridge pickup and I didn't like it all that much by itself. But combined with the split neck pickup the tone was very usable for rythym work, which is all I ever use a split humbucker for. Any help? Thanks! Lew

True, Fralin is an Alnico 4 freak, and I think with good reason. He keeps a supply of Alnico 5's on hand in case somebody sends one back and says it doesn't have enough edge or oomph, but otherwise he's all-Anico 4, all the time. On humbuckers anyway...

Shameless post for no other reason than just to celebrate my...

300TH POST!!!

Yeah thanks for that guys that pretty much answers me. I wouldnt use the split for bridge work anyway, i dont like a bridge strat position as it is let alone a weaker one

Id just use the split for neck and middle cleans, but its not such an important part anyway. I think ill go the fralins afterall they are sounding very apetising

Cheers!
