Hails guys
TODAY, i asked a friend to install the folowing combo in my Ibanez RG 450 LTD Japan.
Paf pro Bridge and Humbucker from Hell Neck.
man, the paf pro Sounds a little brittle and to it is in the Threshold of Harsh/Bright. and it´s Bass is just a Little Tight, better than my CC but not enough at all. it doesn´t shake the EARTH when you palm mute the E open String.
And....it has some kind of Hollow Sound. And it is very nasal, but without some Bass added to it, like the JB. jb has a nasal sound, but with some touch of bass to it. and it doesn´t sound UGLY. HAHAHAHAH
well, for the neck, the HFH work for just one thing. SINGLE NOte leads are very good, but with medium to LESS distortion.. if you add a little more distortion, it stop to sound good and start to crapy out and become fuzzy/muddy.
it doesn´t good for sweep picking with distortion.
it is AN AWESOME CLEAN Pickung. AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
perfect for the neck. very very GOOD for clean sound. and it matches very WELL with the paf pro.
Now i want some advice from you. SHOULD I give 2 MORE Chances to Dimarzio? or should i give just one more? or should i immediately go with Duncans?!
i´m thinking in 3 dimarzio Options now : Super distortion/Super 2 ,Breed/breed, X2n/Air Norton?!!?!?
i think BOTH paf pro, fred and those paf style pickups will not work for me with this guitars/wood etc.
And for the duncans ... i´m thinking in 3 options too
Duncan Distortion/Duncan Distortion, Dimebucker/ Jazz, Duncan Distortion/Jazz(or maybe a Custom Custom Neck).
What do You Think Guys?!
i don´t want to throw in my PAIR OF EMGS on this guitar .
I´ll give this Combo Another chance tomorrow. i´ll bother my friends studio tomorrow and plug my Ibanez in my OLD Crate GX80 and see how they sound on it. if they sound good, i´ll keep them, otherwise quot;THE TRADING POSTquot; Is the way to go. AHAHAHAHAHA
Thank´s and ****ing HAILS!
J.P
i forget..... i´ll play Death/Black/Thrash as always with this one.
and Maybe Detune it from E to B .
Give the X2N a shot, and then go for Duncans.
Thank´s MAN!
I would try the Super Distortion, unless you like super hot pickups, then the X2N might work. I played a second hand (but very nice) Gibson SG the other day that had a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge position, and a PAF Pro in the neck. The Super Distortion had a *very* nice sound. Not short on mids or bass at all, and it was a clear, crisp pickup. It wasn't trebly. I hate treble, so that's a good thing. You can definitely get chuck out of that bad boy. The PAF Pro was very articulate in the neck position and cleans were quite nice. I don't play on the neck pickup too often unless I'm playing clean or with a dark jazz tone. I was impressed with these pickups. I've only really tried one Duncan, and that was a JB in a Jackson neck through Soloist....needless to say that guitar's sound wasn't my style at all. It was quite bright in the Jackson, but I'd imagine it would sound quite a bit better in something made of mahogany.
If you can find one get a DP107 the MegaDrive! Should do what you want. It is a great pickup and I do not understand why DM stopped manufacturing their best! You could get it directly from DM, or better yet find one used.
B
PS. I recently bought a used invader and that pickup has serious in your face bass. I don't think you should go for a X2N or gibson 500T or Super Distortion because they are rather flat (eq wise, I mean the highs are not pulled back) pickups, and their highs might be somewhat irritating for your uses. Have you ever tried a tone zone? That is also a good DM pickup that you might wanna try. Finally one of the most noticable bass I got was from Rio Grande BBQ. It ain't a high output pickup, like high 12K's, but it has that in your face bass that you might wanna check.
Why don't you try your CC (which I know you like) with an a3 magnet. It would increase the definition in the bass (but also would make your CC have less mids and slightly more highs).
I understand why you can be disapointed with the PafPro; it is a p-u that most user put in the neck so it have to be treeby and not very powerfull , and the HFH is good for shred and clean but not much else , it doesn't have a kick for rythm . If you want metal and Dimarzio a popular combo is XN2 bridge and ether a PafPro or Fred ( or ToneZone but beware of the mud !!) for the neck .
If you want Duncan : Distortion or C5 (if your guitar have enought mids ) in bridge and Demon ( if your guitar is bright ) , Jazz ( think HFH with a kick ) , full shred ( if your guitar have enought bass ) for the neck .
I have and Ibanez with basswood body and the C5/Demon combo work there cause the guitar is bright and middy .
YES GUYS
thank´s for the awesome reply
FAB.REGNAUT
my basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard is just like you said, bright and middy, but the highs are not QUALITY highs as in my charvel.
so, i will need a pickup with a good ammount of Bass, not too much, and not reduced bass too.. TIGHT Bass, i dont mind excess of mids. eheheh but too much mids WITHOUT A bass is a pain in the ass... and Good Highs, not reduced one, but Quality Highs. don´t know about the c5. i personally don´t like it, but could be an option
Dr Barlo, thank´s for the reply, i can´t find a megadriver here in brazil so easy... maybe on ebay. eheheh
well, did you ever tryed a CC in the neck spot? is it Bassy?! i´ll check out the TONE Zone in the bridge.
i´ve never tried the rio grande BBQ. Q
Hails and thank´s for the input guys
More feedeback please?

Give the Tone Zone AND the Breed a chance. I dunno, but the Breed really deserves to be more popular than the Tone Zone imo. It has better clarity and can do the quot;chugga-chuggaquot; riffs very well.
Replace the HfH with a Paf Joe on the neck or try moving the Paf Pro to the neck first and see if it improves on the HfH.
Yes heretic, it is what i´ll exactly DO.
Q
the guys at dimarzio TECH support recommended me a Paf pro neck and a evolution bridge. i´ve owned an evo in another guitar. and disliked it for black metal speed picking riffs. but i´ll give it a TRY on this guitar FOR SURE.

Try your current PAF Pro in the neck, and get something else for the bridge. Perhaps TZ, perhaps something else. I'm sure that Breed is a good choice as well, it was a serious contender for me earlier on. But first of all, try that PAF Pro in the neck!!
just stick to duncans j.p.! :fing25:
ok, just my 0.02.
in the neck, stick to pickups with clarity. low output neck pickup will do great for metal under extreme gain. remember, you need clarity in the neck. if a thicker tone is desired, the tone knob is always there.
i know you like the cc in the bridge. the cc is excellent in a bright guitar. albeit the cc having spongy bass, i am still able to coax real tight chuggas from it. experiment with your right hand technique and amp settings. if 'shake the earth' bass is what you want, look no further than the custom. don't let the ceramic magnet deter you. the bass response is out of this world. however, i find it plenty bright in my mij fender contemporary strat (my numero uno metal machine). what i did was tame the highs with 250k volume pot.
btw, i paired the dc with a jazz neck with 250k vol and 500k tone pots. if it matters, my strat has a basswood body, maple/rosewood neck and kahler tremolo. i get all the tight bass and clarity i will ever need from this combo.
dani
The PAF Pro is a good pickup but I would never use it for death metal.
For death metal where you need clarity stay away from Tone Zone, and Super Distortion...the bottom ends are too big and loose on those IMO.
Get the Megadrive like someone else said or try the Evo but the Evo might be to brittle for you.
Steve's Special is another option.
If you can handle the output...X2N.Dimarzio makes good pickup you just gotta pick the right one for the job...using a PAF Pro for DM is like using a Seth Lover on the Duncan side.

Are you off the DiMarzio kick already?
Hey JP, my Ibanez has the same specs as yours, and I'm starting to think the X2N might be too thick for speedy death metal stuff.
Holy crap... let me take note of the Options
some recomend super distortion, Some not.
some recomend x2n, some not, some recomend Tone zne, some not.
if i decided to go with a all Combo, it would be A pair of duncan distortions or a Duncan Distortion/Jazz neck.
and All of you recomend me to use PAF pro in the neck after get rids of it.
I´ll do the Paf pro Neck/Dimarzio Evolution Bridge. if i can find my friend that has the Evolution Neck.
Thank´s for the reply again.
DR barlo, do you still have that X2N? wanna sell it? and the megadrive? do you mind to Lend me ? i´ll test it and send it back to you.
J.P
Ah... an updtae... i just called two friends of mine that owns both Evolution in the bridge of their guitars and they agree to lend me it tomorrow for a test.
so I´LL TRY Evolution Bridge and Paf Pro Neck.
Another Question : is there anyone of you that owned or heard any Duncan distortion Bridge/ Jazz neck for Metal stuff? does the DD OVERPOWER the JAzz Neck?
J.P
PS - Another friend will TRY TO lend my His Cousin´s X2N

SO i´ll have a complete SET of tests on the dimarzio territory. I just don´t have any friend or people that i know here in my city that OWNS a TONEZONE or a Breed pickup. so i can´t Borrow one to test
