I'm trying to wire a Telecaster with two pickups, a volume knob, and a 3 way switch and it's not working right so I'd appreciate some help. I followed the diagram and checked it over and over but it's not working properly. The middle switch position doesn't work, and the front and back switch positions are switched. There's also a loud buzz when I don't touch the bridge or strings, but I think that might be normal. What am I doing wrong?

first things first the hum sounds like a bad ground connection. make sure you are running a wire from the back of the volume pot to the bridge and that both connections are soldered well, should stop most of that hum.

I have a wire running from the back of the pot to the shielding in the bridge pickup cavity which connects to the bridge. Should I take out the shielding and solder the ground directly to the bridge, or will the shielding help to reduce hum?

I can post a picture of the wiring if I need to, since I'd really like to get it working.

I took a picture of the wiring. The buzzing was because the guitar was sitting on my amp. My problem now is that the bridge and neck positions are backwards on the switch, and the middle position isn't working. Perhaps my switch doesn't match the one in the diagram? I'm also unsure about which pickups wires are soldered to what, since I'm using Fender pickups and a diagram.

I can't really answer any of your questions, but if you are wiring a Tele with a Duncan diagram, but have Fender PUPs that may be the problem.....

Go here and search for your particular Tele and find the correct diagram.

This is the one you want:

Standard Telecaster

I notice, that on the far left, it appears as though you have the shield going to the switch, and the center conductor going to ground. Its hard to say for sure from the pic. If its possible, take another pic from slightly above the angle you did with that one.

But that PDF file should do it.

I decided to add a tone control to make it simpler to follow the diagram. I wired it up using the Fender diagram, and after messing with it for over 2 hours I'm confused and can't find the problem. I thought the switch might be backwards so I flipped it but I'm still getting the same result-the neck and bridge switch positions are backwards and the middle position doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

The black wire from the bridge pickup has a white wire spliced on, as labeled in the picture.
