What mic preamps would you guys recommend for recording guitar? I'm ebay'ing right now for a SM-57 and would like a decent tube preamp to go with it. However I am a cheap bastard, so I'll be looking on ebay for the preamp as well. One that I can ebay for less that $100 would be nice.
So let me know what you would buy on this budget. I'll be using a Tascam 414.
I wouldn't bother with anything tube at that price. They may have a tube but they still aren't all that great. The Presonus/ART stuff works but I wouldn't get hung up on the tube thing at that price point. The best bang for the buck tube mic pre I can recommend is 'The Brickquot; by Groove tubes. I have a pair of them and they sound fantastic. New they were about $350 ea.

Why do you want or think you need a 'tube' preamp? A decent preamp...one that's a real upgrade from the Tascam will set you back a few hundered bucks and the good tube preamps (as opposed to 'toob' pres) cost around a $1K or more. Take that extra scratch and either save it, buy a better microphone or mic stand.
Not true, the Aphex 207 is only $400 and is a killer sounding dual channel tube mic pre.
