I am in need of speaker wisdom... I have two older ADA 212 cabs with unknown speakers in them. I have a VHT head with a Randall preamp with various preamp modules in it and I play a classic/blues type music - everything from Pink Floyd to SRV to Led Zeppelin etc, etc. Anyway, I have been considering the celestion vintage 30's but due to the cost, I was wondering if there might be something equally as good or better for less - I may get two vintage 30's and pair those with two of another type to avoid buying four of them -- Advice please, thanks.
I don't think there is anything that equals the tone of a Vintage 30 or G12H30 for less. There are some that sound similar for less...but none that equal those two for less. Buy 'em used...that way you'll get the genuine tone of a Vintage 30 or G12H30 for less the price of a new one. Lew
thanks Lew - I just saw that someone else had a speaker thread further down the page - it seems as if some of the criticism of the Vintage 30's is a harsh high end if I am reading the reviews correctly. IF I remember correctly Lew, you play a blues based music yourself - do you find that to be true, or do you find them balanced - thanks again
what about the hellatone 30s or 60s from avatar. supposedly they are actual celestion vintage 30s or g12h30s broken in and sold for i think 75. sounds too good to be true...
i think eminence governors/wizards are cheaper and are supposed to be improved versions, like the governor (v30) doesn't have the harsh frequencies. Buy them from avatar, get them for less, get great customer service
but yeah, don't rule out g12h30's/wizards
evidently I put this in the wrong room to start - anyway thanks for putting this thread where it should be.
Ok, one more question - the Greenbacks I've seen are rated at 25 watts per speaker while the vintage 30's are 60 watts per, so 2 greenbacks make a 50 watt cabinet in a 212 set up correct? By doing that wouldn't I lose head room for my clean sound if powered by a 50 watt amp? If my clean sound is as important as my dirty sound wouldn't I want to go with the higher powered speaker to preserve the clean sound??? AArgh
I am assuming this would be true for the equivalent eminence speakers as well.
FWIW, I recently put in 2-V30's, and 2- Eminence Swamp Thangs in my 4x12, and it really brought out the low-mids/bottom, more so than the stock G1275's which were in it originally. I like the growl that this cab has now. I still have a cab with 4-G1275's in it for additional texture. As mentioned, Avatar Speakers has the best prices around. Pretty damn helpful, too.
cleans-you want the g12's. Bite you want the v30's. I have 2 ADA 2/12 vintage 30 cabs wich I love and use to this day. They sound very good cuz the cabs are oversized and they have a bright and vintage switch on the back that basically-when on vintage-makes the speaker clip faster and harder on low volumn. I get very good cleans out of them due to the oversized 2/12 configeration. Dirty they realy sound good. Need more base? Just push the 2-2/12 cabs togather side by side and you get almost the same as a 4/12 cab. and carrying around? Good gad its so much easier to haul them places. I will never lug a 4/12 cab around again if I can help it.I had 2 ADA 2x12 angled cabs. The speakers are crap. Try governors on the top and manowar or g12t75 on the bottom or the swap thang/texas combo. I would not put the wizard on top as it is louder than the others. The v30on the bottom and g12h30 on top etc. Just get rid of those 50 watt stock Celestions as they are bland.
As I'm sure its already been crammed down your throat that The Celestion V30 G12H-30 RULE....I just won't repeat it. (They do)......[but im not repeating it]
