We have a B.C.Rich Beast in for a guts swap,(Zakk Wilde EMG set).
Pretty straight ahead stuff.
so we review proper fretboard cleaning and polishing,de-wiring,and general cleaning and pre set-up work.
We notice that the guitar,(which is in excellent shape),has a chip out of the top of the headstock, perfect, free work for the customer and training time.
We go over fixing a chip and blending out a finish flaw-goes great.
Onto the wiring,after all is ready to roll we notice that the bridge pick-up isn't working.A couple of hours of checking and re-checking,(I was coming and going while guiding the troubleshooting from a few feet away),he double checks the first thing I asked about..quot;Is the clip on the pick-up?quot;
Now there still seems to be a problem so tommorrow we're going to go through the whole harness with metres and such, but aaaaauuuurrrrggghhh, always check the basics first.
However I do have to say that the guy isn't a dunce and does solid work.
The whole point behind this is this:When troubleshooting a problem start with the most simple thing first. Then look for the big issues.
BTW-Don't throw your hands up or flip at people,if guided right you will learn more from your mistakes than anything.
Remember:the difference between a mistake and a f**k-up is that a f**k-up is a mistake you didn't learn from.

I can never remember which way the clips go on....I always end up doing the metronome-close-to-the-pup trick.

I sent an email to EMG tech support suggesting a better way to label the clip, as the arrow doesn't tell anything. The arrow could mean that that side goes up, or that it is supposed to be showing. He wasn't very helpful. I've heard from tons of people that installed EMGs incorrectly because of that connector. If enough people tell their tech support it should be fixed, maybe they would change it.

I sold a EMG81 to some guy and he did that. He had some luthier put it in, and the luthier took it out because he said it wasn't working. He asked for a refund and I said no because I knew it was alright, and told him to tell his luthier that he put the clip on wrong. He sent a complaint to paypal to force a refund, I have not heard from him since. I think he finally figured out it worked.
Actually it wasn't that the clip was in backwards.
The clip had been pulled right off of the pick-up.
What is a clip?
on newer EMGs, they have a quick-connection in the form of like a clip and three pins on the back of the pickup (apart from the 89, which has like 6 or 7 i think).. its a quick way to connect or swap EMGs, but it does get confusing which way up you're connecting the clip..
from : localhost/out the wee pictures - one shows the clip, one shows the back of the pickup..
why dont they just 'key' the clip and socket so that it only fits one way?

Because that, my friend, would be too easy! As an engineer you should know we do everything the hard way around here.
Luke
haha because no-one would need a guitar tech to fit them then
Problem solved, clip wasn't making full contact on one of the pins.
Sure glad they made the installation easier

Oh,now you had to go and make sense.

Ironically that was the idea behind the clip
