How many of you have switched out the stock Gibson burstbuckers on your Les Pauls (1amp;2 in my case)? The neck pup of my new '58 Reissue sounds good, but the bridge is a little harsh.

Any opinions on replacements?

As a matter of fact, I just switched the BB's out of my 57' Goldtop Reissue. Mine had been switched to a 3 in the bridge and a 2 in the neck. For a while I thought I had them dialed in, but in the end they just weren't right.

I replaced them with a set of Seth Lovers. Very nice change. The neck position still retained the clarity of the BB2, but gained some welcome added warmth and smoothness. The bridge position was the biggest change. Gone were the harsh and almost too crunchy highs and lows, and they were replaced with just the right amount of crunch...low and high, with more midrange added to balance the pickup just right.

If I can just get the bridge to quit squeeling under high gain, I'll be set. I bought mine second hand, and judging by the solder joints, I believe the cover had been removed at one point...I think this accounts for the squeeling. I have heard many say that they have no issues with squeel. I will say that with the gain on my Marshall set at noon to 1 oclock, there are no issues....only when I get close to diming the pre-amp gain. I'll continue to work on it.

I would suggest either Seths or Antiquities for your Historic, unless you feel the tone is somewhat dark. In that case, I would go with a 59' in the bridge to add some top end and clarity, and either a Seth or Antquity in the neck.

My first Historic came with 57 Classics and I swapped those with lots of different pups until I finally came back home to Antiquities. Seths are another great choice.

I have a 2004 R7 Refin and it's still stock and rather unplayed as of late. I might just stick it in the closet for a while longer while I deicde what I want to do with it.

Played with the pole pieces a little, its really just the high E thats a little ice picky. Then again, i'm not turning my amps up cause its late.

Jeff-I know antiquties sound great in these guitars, maybe eventually I'll spring for a set!

Scott-Whats an R7 refin?

I'm going with Wagner Goodwood bridge in my 57RI to thicken it up a bit, and a Seth in the neck. I don't care for the BB 1 amp; 2, in fact I tihnk I ;iked the BBV in my standard better.

I have a set of Seths that are going in my R7.

I agree that Seths or Antiquities are the best choices.

one of mine has wagner goodwoods ...

the other has peter florence VOODOO 59 quot;hotsquot; .. which are absolutly amazing. vintage paf w/ some ooomph! the A3 mag in the neck is a nice balance between the smooth round A2 and the crunchier A5.

seth's or ant's would make great choices too.

I guess a lot of people are switching them out...

Mine came with 57 Classics. I swapped them for some double cream Tom Holmes humbuckers that I already had...otherwise I would have gone with a set of Antiquities or something from the Duncan Custom Shop. Lew

Lew,

I have heard the '57 classics-they are smoother and to my ears, more duncan like than Gibson-like.

I think I see some antiquties in my future (or nickle covered seths).

For now, I think I will play around with these a litlle, they have a nice, woody tone....

from : localhost/do you tone gurus think?

You can take this one with a grain of salt, it's a vote for antiquities in your future.

The Argenta Guitar shopowner (guy I work for afterhours) has two R8's both with antiquities and they sound phenomeal. Plucky, with nice mids and highs.
I have found that the highs can be overbearing with any PAF style pup that doesn't have the amp dialed in.
