Does anyone own one, or have you tried one? I am thinking of replacing my Mesa with one of these for live work, and leaving the PODxt at home for practice amp; recording. A lot of the models are the same, it will work with the foot controller I already have, and I can even move presets back and forth from the PODxt.
What do you think?
I have a Flextone III Plus w/112 Ext. cabinet. I love mine. It did take me a couple of months to get everything dialed in right. I love mine for live and studio work. I don't have to mic it. I just plug the cable from the snake directly into one of the XLR outs on the back. It has its own trim control too.
Thanks for the info! The Plus was the model I was thinking of getting myself. I definitely like the idea of going straight into the board using the XLR outs.
Anyone else?
I'm really happy with my Flex III XL.
I use it as a backup, home recording, small gig, side project amp.
Matter of fact I'm using it for our next couple of gigs instead of my rack and 4x12s.
So, I've been using it down at rehearsal lately.
It's holding it's own just fine.
Cuts through nicely.
My fav tones right now are the
Marshall Jubilee for rhythm.
Roland JC120 for clean.
Bogner XTC for lead.
I use the Behringer FCB1010 to control it.
Couple of suggestions.
On some of the models like the Jubilee watch your bass end. It can get quite boomy if set to high. Little goes a long way. I have mine set about 25% on the jubilee patch.
Don't crank the presence. It really adds a lot of brightness. Again a little goes a long way. I think mine is usually around 50% on most patches.
Turn off the compressor. Especially with the marshall models.
This is the only thing I don't care for with the flex. I keep it turned off on all patches.
I personally don't feel the flex needs it.
Watch the noise gate levels. The noise gate is actually very good.
But, if you set your threshold too high it'll chop your notes.
I always adjust the gate to where it's just kicking in.
Basically, when i set it up, I'll turn the threshold totally counterclockwise so your hear the normal amp hiss. Then I'll slowly adjust it back clockwise till I hear the gate kick in and there's no hiss.
B sure to read the Line 6 pilot manual. Lots of very very useful info on how the Flex panel mimics each amp model. Once you learn how those amp models use the gain, EQ, and levels, it'll make adjusting the flex controls much easier.
Download the L6 edit. There's a lot more tweaking you can do than whats available from the flex panel.
Get yourself a nice amp stand. Getting the Flex off the ground and angled more at yourself, will allow you to hear your sounds much better.
Most people will set up two sets of patches.
One set for bedroom levels, and one set for gig levels.
Reason being, what may sound great at bedroom levels may suck ass at gig levels, and visa versa.
Good luck and enjoy.

Hey JJ, After I bought my Flextone III Plus, I had it about a week and was ready to return it. I just couldn't get out of it what I wanted. I kept with it though and am very very happy. It did take me a couple of months to dial it in...
If you want to get more biased opinion on Flex III's visit my Line 6 forum. Also I have a patch database will plenty of patches you can download, load up and audition that users upload. Linek below...
Thanks for all the good info everyone!
My local shop is quoting approx $750 CAN tax for a brand new Flextone III Plus. I can get approx. $400 - 500 for my Boogie on trade. I now have to decide whether to buy that, or buy the $350 keyboard amp and plug my PODxt into it. The advantages to the second option are that I can also use the keyboard amp for vocals, and I don't have to worry about moving presets back and forth.
Hmm ...

I'd say sell the boogie on ebay rather than trading.

I would agree with you, except this thing weighs a TON, and it would cost a mint to ship it. I may try selling it through a local classified, but that is always such a PITA.
Or maybe the Trading Post, but I only know of one other forumite in my area.

JJAtomic Amps.
from : localhost/get a cab and power amp.
Boogie 20/20 and Avatar 2x12 for example.
I use 2 Atomics in stereo. It kills with the XT!
I tried the flextone 3 a little while ago and thought it was a turkey. Sounds were ok, but the overall feel was very flat.
I'd go for a pod or valvetronix and an atomic...
I have one and use it a LOT. Totally cool amp. Much like others have said the learning curve is steep. Not an instant results sort of amp.
I think you would regret selling the boogie.
Tried the podxt into the boogies effects return? (with cab modeling off)

Too late! I sold that thing a month ago and got an Atomic ... don't regret it at all.
God, where the hell did this thread come from?
I've got a Flex III Plus... still working through it. GREAT versatility. Great for small venues.
