What is everyone's preference?

Do you know what forum this is sir? I think that will pretty much tell you which will win the pole, Duncan fo sho!!

Well. I have seen people who say they really like EMGs on this site. I was just hoping this poll will get some replys that state some differences between the two pickups. I never got a clear description of the differences. All I have heard was EMGs have more quot;screamquot; and SDs have a quot;darkerquot; sound. This came from an EMG fanatic though.

1.

i've always played passives. to be honest i havent played any EMG active before. only the crappy HZ.i'm sure they arent bad at all . but with SD , i dun think there is a need for me to look into actives.

emg's arent bad pups. i still have a pickguard loaded with an 81/sv/sv set with a spc and pa2 but i couldnt tell ya the last time i even thought about putting it in

this is not very fair?
you would have to ask which one for metal then EMG would win by a landslide

I like both equally BUT for metal tone ala zakk, slayer, etc EMG hands down!
duncans are more versilte for sure though

I am a huge SD fan, but I think that EMG's can be just as versatile. For instance, I can use EMG SA strat pickups for country, rock, even metal. In fact, one of my buddies used my EMG equipped tele in our hard rock band...even the little tele neck pickup got harmonic squeals, the bridge could really shred. They are very quiet and have a high PERCEIVED output due to the pre-amp in the pickup.

Still, I prefer the sound of SD's in most instances. They have a more 'vintage' tone overall, IMO. EMG's can sound kind of sterile to me unless I build my setup around them.

Bottom line is that you're gonna have to try them for yourself because pickup choice is very different based on the individual players needs and preferences...that is why there's a market for them, after all. I mean, what percentage of pickups are replaced because they malfunction?

Does anyone ever use the search button?

No

What for, why read one of 30 threads that already exist with the information you need when you can start your own and not get the answer you want

Probably the 80's!

Sorry about the whole search button thing. This is the first forum I've ever used. Anyway, Farkus your answer was helpful. Because the quot;vintagequot; sound is what I like. As you can tell by my name I'm a MegaDeth fan and Mustaine of course used SDs. I've always loved the sound he had. It was a very clear and defined, yet heavy at the same time. I play alot of classic and hard rock as well. AC/DC and Van Halen two of my favorites. I've heard alot about Duncans from friends and others but not as much about the EMGs. I try to compare Metallica and MegaDeth considering Hammett used EMG81 and Mustaine used JB/Jazz. Always preferred the MegaDeth sound over Metallica. But then again, most Metallica is slower than the majority of MegaDeth thats out there. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Its cool man, but really if you search you can find a ton of posts about different pickups and such and not have to wait for people to respond to your post.

d d dun dun d-d-dunca d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d............DUNCANS!
