any suggestions about which single coil size SD will sound similar to a p90 (neck and mid only) Im interested in both standard and hum canceling models and am looking from the standard duncan line stocked at most places.
Many people thinks that quarter pound series are similar to P-90's in tone. All in all are high output single coils with a fatter tone. There are some similarities with P-90!! May be the hot stack series are close too since they are hot output pickups with a single coil tone.
DIMarzio claims the SDS-1 has a P-90 tone.
Im only interested in seymours as I have a jb hum and want to stay with seymour.

As far as I know the best P-90 sounding pickup that will simply drop into a Strat is a Lindy Fralin SP43
I love Seymour's pickups and use them in almost every electric guitar I own.
But for the P-90 in a Strat size, I use the Lindy Fralin Steel Pole 43 and that is the pickup I think gets that P-90 in a single coil size tone better than any other pickup I've tried.
Superb pickup. Great tone and great vibe. Blends beautifully when combined with a vintage style alnico 5 Strat middle pickup too: nice and chimey.

I've never tried or heard the Fralin so I can't comment on it but I would say the QP would be the closest I have heard from SD. In the ballpark certainly but there still is no replacement for an actual P-90.
You could get something like a Lil '59 or Lil JB (do they make those?) and wire it in parallel. I think that would get you close and you would have humbucking/hum-cancelling options as well.
If you want real P-90 sound from a Strat why not just get a pickguard cut out for one or more P-90's?
can anyone say what type of output the sd quarterpound pu may have in the mid position compared to my full hum jb in the bridge?? will the qp be louder than the jb?? how about the 2nd combined sound?
On this topic I'm wondering if anyone has looked at Dimarzio's bluesbucker? I understand it was made for this purpose with nonsemetrical coils-
I to build a gtr this summer around a P90 mahagoney sound but will have to have at least hum canceling for the venues we play- If it turns out that there are no humbuckers that are really convinsing, I'm pretty sure I will try a dummy coil, ala Gibson Blueshawk-
So while we are on it, anyone have any experience with P90s and a dummy coil?
Thanks!
I know I am on the outside of this but I like Gibson P-100's. The SD P-90 stacks are pretty dang good too. A freind of mine has a black Gibson LP Deluxe with these in it and it is a tone monster.
