I saw an Ebay sale for a JCM 800 and in the description the guy said it was the amp that Hendix used. So I sent him an e-mail saying that I thought that was really dishonest and unfair towards unsuspecting ebayers.
I just got a reply in which the guy was basically calling me an idiot for thinking that the JCM800 was a different amp to the SLP 1987X (I know Hendrix used the 1959 but the amps are pretty similiar, you have to give him that!) and I got a bit paranoid. Please can someone clarify for my peace of mind that these are different amps and Marshall haven't just re-packaged an SLP.
Thanks,
Benja
Why don't you post the auction? The Fella's here will be the judge. It's sad enuff than nobody seems to be able to sell a White Strat on ebay without mentioning Hendrix.
I had a look but I couldn't fit it again. Just disappeared, I guess maybe he got quite a bit of abuse from others as well.
It was basically a standard 1x12 JCM800 50w combo. He said this was the amp that Hendrix used. Please someone tell me I'm not going mental. I thought the JCM's came out in the 80's, after Hendrix had already died.
I am going mental, aren't I? I've missed something really obvious and I look really stupid now. HAHA
You are right, there was no such thing as a JCM800 till the 80's.
Hendrix used many different amps in his career(That ended tragicaly 9/18/70)
Fender Twin's,Showman's and Sunn amps etc. But you can rest easy tonight
that he never got to play a JCM800 1x12 combo. ( Unless Jim Marshall had a
secret prototype that Jimi beta tested for him? )
I've always read that Jimi preferred the 1987 Heads (50 watt version of the 1959 SLP) with added gain to the preamp stage.
And no, he never used a JCM800. He never even used a Master Volume head as they were not released until 1975.
There were no 800s back then
It would be correct to say that Hendrix used Marshall amps...but he did not use the JCM-800 model. That model didn't hit the market until well after Jimi's death. Jimi used non-master volume Marshall 100 watt plexis. For one or two cuts on Are You Experienced he used Noel Redding's bass amp but for the most part he used the model 1959 lead version.
