OK, I may be having buyer's remorse with my Lawrence L500L. Not that it's a bad pickup, I think I just pictured it sounding different.
Here's what I'm picturing: think Joe Walsh, but with slightly more gain and more output. A hint of Slash. Maybe some George Lynch thrown in there, like the beginning of Dokken's Heaven Sent.
I'm guessing this is the Custom Custom, since it is quot;vintage but with more output.quot; But the '59, Custom, and Alnico II sound bytes are all pretty close.
Note: I'm used to a Duncan Distortion, but want an axe with a different, more vintage vibe that would still crank if I want it to.
Help!
I dont know. A Duncan JB?
I can get some Walsh, Slash, tones from my A2P. The Dokken stuff it doesn't have enough low end grind for, but can be convincing.
I really like the tone from it, smooth but fat.
Luke
Well, Slash uses Alnico 2 Pro humbuckers so that's kind of a no-brainer. Joe Walsh uses late 50's Les Pauls and when Seymour was asked what pickups to use to get the tone Clapton got with Cream using his '58 and '60 Les Paul, Seymour recommended the Seth Lover or Antiquity. Those are not overwound at all, but neither are the pickups Joe Walsh and Slash use. If you do want something with a vintage vibe but slightly overwound for some of that George Lynch thing, then the Screamin Demon is another no brainer. It's hotter than a 59B but not as hot as the Custom series or the JB. Lew

Three suggestions:
1. Get a Swiss Army Six coil pickup with 8 way switching
2. Get three axe's (2 pauls and an ESP) and go with all of Lew's recs
3. Get some medication for your Multiple personality disorder so you can settle on one pup
- There is no such pup as you describe from anything I've ever heard. And it might suckif it did. Have you heard of Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper? Interesting, yes. Something I would drink a lot of - No. Go for the hottest PAF based pup that will clean up a bit when you turn down. Likely the Demon.

that's funny! and so painfully true. I 'm glad someone slapped me - I needed that.
I'd say the Custom bridge, Alnico 2 Pro neck and coil-splitters, no doubt about it.
Watching the Crossroads festival DVD, Walsh was using a Strat and a custom Rickenbacker, both with EMG's, through the Crate amps that many of them used on stage and he sounded exactly like the old recordings. Some would say that's proof that tone's in the fingers. I'd just say that it's proof that low-output 50's p'ups are aren't neccessary to nail his tone. Same with Slash, I've used '59's, Stag-Mag's, and Customs and have gotten a convincing Slash tone (rhythm and lead). That, and the Custom can do 80's metal all day long.
Maybe a Screamin Demon with an alnico 2 magnet?
duncan custom trust me!
cool. many votes for the Custom. interesting.
